Imagine that on September 11th, 2001 that only the Pentagon is hit and no other targets. How would the reaction differ from what occured in reality? Would the foreign policy response be the same? What other butterflies would occur? How would the attack be remembered today?

Airport security would be beefed up and we'd be in Afghanistan.

I think the media might make a slightly less big deal out of it, but everything else would otherwise be the same. The Pentagon is still a very important location and since a lot of people (especially govt. personnel) were killed in the attack, the U.S. would probably still invade Afghanistan and remove the Taliban. Also, security would be increased nationwide as in RL.

Without the Twin Towers hit, it would be harder for Bush to get support to invade Iraq just in case there might be a threat there someday.  However, a lot of this depends on why only the Pentagon gets hit.  If it is because all of the planes head there, then it is going to take a lot more damage than it did, since not all of them are going to hit in the small portion that had been reinforced to deal potential damage.

Well, do the other 3 planes end up in the middle of nowhere?

better queston is:  What if, in addition to the WTC and Pentagon, Flight 93 had taken off late and hit Congress?!

The White House would have been a more dramatic place to hit than Congress.

What if the Capitol Building was hit first, then the Pentagon, then the WTC. In that order. That would have been a lot more dramatic. I don't think a lot of people in New York would have felt a urgency to evacuate because of something that happened in Washington D.C., plus more people would have been in the WTC if it was done an hour or so later.

Having both houses of Congress, plus all of the WTC, and some of Pentagon would have been jaw dropping.

You know, thinking about this, America dodged a bullet. Could have been a lot worse.

The mosque debate would be taking place in DC as opposed to NYC.
