Let's say Carter is successful in negotiating the release of the prisoners within his 100 day deadline, and pulls past Reagan to win re-election.  Reagan concedes and promises to no-longer pursue the presidency.  How would America have shaped without the Age of Reagan and the country re-aligning to the Right?

The Conservative Realignment would have still occurred sooner or later with a different GOP figure (possibly with Dole or Kemp).

Whether Carter or Reagan wins in 1980, you still get a realignment of the country to the Right.  The main difference would have been that instead of the parties polarizing to the extent that they did in real life, the Democratic and Republican parties would have remained broad spectrum parties comfortably ranging from the left to the center-right for the Democrats and the center-left to the right for the Republicans.  Despite Carter's post-Presidency activities, he governed as a center to center-right American politician for the most part.

You get a very right wing realignment in 1984.  1980 was a realignment, but not a strong one.

Arguably 1978/1980 was "stage one" of the realignment to the right, and 1994 was "stage two."

Obviously Carter would win by a nose. So the nation would still hate him, and therefore the nation does re-align to the right. In 1984, Mondale is smashed by Bush or Dole.

Would that make 2012 "stage three"? Tongue

Carter victory in 1980=The Republican Revolution 12 years earlier than it occurred IRL.

A Carter victory would not prevent the alignment to the right, it would speed it up.

After having read this thread, and others like it, I can see the GOP going moderate in 1984 with Bush or Dole, and if that didn't happen, we'd probably have a Kemp Revolution in the 1990's. (Kemp/Goldwater '88!)
