If he is a Christian (9% chance) or a Muslim (<1% chance) he isn't a very good one.

Or rather, a good one.  (I prefer fake or unenthused ones).

He and his handlers would do best not to continue fueling the fire on this issue.

Praying often and being Christian is required of the king of France, not the president of the United States (or France, for that matter).

I used to think Obama was in the top tier of politicians when it come to how honest the content was of what came out of his mouth. I gave him a lot of credit for that. I don't anymore. It is clear to me on this pray thing that he is lying. I can't prove that he is lying, but I believe that almost to the level of beyond a reasonable doubt. It is disturbing to me. It would be interesting to have a poll of what percentage believe Obama on this one. I doubt it would break 40%, and may not even break 30%.  I suspect a substantial portion of his base think he is disingenuous on this one.

I really don't get the hang-up about politician's religions in America. I mean, the UK's deputy PM is an Atheist and David Miliband, who'll probably the next Leader of the Opposition, is an Athiest. And, apparently, only 8 out of 22 ministers in Tony Blair's last government admitted to believing in God. (Don't forget Julia Gillard in Australia's an Athiest too.)

I don't see how religion, be it Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hindu, Sikh or Atheism, seriously affects the job performance of the president of a constitutionally secular country like the US.

That's because we have not been a traditionally secular nation.

Contrary to the intended structure of the nation from the beginning.  There's just been a constant display of domination by one religion all along.

At the beginning of this country states had their own individual churches...

Well, actually no... it's more that only eight responded with that answer to the Mail. Most didn't answer the question or told the paper that their religious beliefs (if any) were a private matter. Which, in a way, is even more telling. If a public figure here says that their religion is a private matter, people don't ask further questions. If Obama were to say that... aha...

The key thing is that religion plays a bigger role in public life in the U.S than it does in the rest of the 'Western' world. This is mostly for historical reasons, but it is also in part (in my opinion anyway) because of the secularist nature of American governmental institutions and the continued existence of organisations who try to make sure that governmental institutions are kept that way; people always react against that kind of thing. Related to that is the assumption that people who do not believe in God are always anti-religion, something that you couldn't assert in Britain or almost any other 'Western' country without absurdity.

If Obama was Muslim, it wouldn't make any difference to me.

I meant to offer up that opinion myself. Good job for doing that chore for me.  I am really tired of this bullsh**t.

The anti-Muslim thing is terrible. It has infested RightOSphere/Race42008, it seems. Disgusting.

They are acting like Free Republic right now.

Fascinating point. This particular near Atheist has no interest in anti-theism in the public square or elsewhere per se. I really believe religion does more good for our species than not.  And as a Yank, I feel rather alone. I take it you suspect it would be less so across the pond?

Why do they feel the need to respond with something like this. Just leave it alone, keep scratching at a cut and it's just going to get infected.

The White House declaring as a public relations matter that the President prays daily is kind of sad.

You know the White House is on the defensive when they have to defend the prayer habits of POTUS.
