A NEW Atlas Parliament (Founding Thread)
«
on:
August 26, 2010, 02:25:04 am »
I've decided that I'd like to try and get a new mock Parliament together. Now, if anyone is good with drawing maps up (I'm not. If you could PM me and ask for the job, it's first come, first get to do. Please help me out). I'll post the parties and the history of our new fictional country as well as constituencies.
CYRENCIA
-
A large industrialized nation governed by a Parliament, the House of Equals. It is located to the north of the United States (What would be where Canada is). Population is rougly 2\3rds of the U.S. Mostly English speaking population with a minor French stronghold in Northern Fontaine Province.
PROVINCES
:
DeLeon
- DeLeon is the Capital City of Cyrencia and its constituency surrounds the city and most of the province of Fontaine as well. DeLeon is the largest constituency and tends to be stridently leftist in it's economic and social views.
Northern Fontaine
- A smaller French speaking province. Fairly conservative. Often threatens to revolt from Cyrencia and form it's own nation.
Meredith
- Medium consituency, mostly miners and laborers. Has a communist streak, though they rarely win seats.
Atlantica
- Coastal area constituency. Staunchly capitalistic and relies strongly on commercial shipping, rail and air to keep up the labor force. Socially progressive.
Westsnow
- Moderate constituency. Coldest temperatures in Cyrencia with a sub-arctic climate.
Valentine
Second largest province. Valentine is a generally liberal province that tends to support social democracy.
POLITICAL PARTIES
:
Social Democratic Party
- Largest political party in Cyrencia. The SDP has been out of power for recent years, however and have only just regained the majority. The SDP is socially and economically leftist. Their largest support comes from Valentine and DeLeon.
National Reform Party
- Capitalistic economically but socially moderate party. Second largest in Cyrencia. Only recently lost power after 5 years in power. They are most staunchly supported in Atlantica.
Regional Rights Party
- Right wing extreme seperatist party heavily concentrated in Northern Fontaine. Has little appeal elsewhere as a "single issue" party. Elects a handful of MPs.
Independent Labor Party
- Left leaning political party that is economically Marxist and takes no stand on social issues.
So far, this is what I have. If anyone would like to help out with suggestions and stuff, we could get a new Parliament started

I will make the map. Does the southern border need to line up with the US' northern border, since Cyrencia is located where Canada should be? Should some major cities, then, be located on the Great Lakes?

It doesn't have to mesh completely, but that's the general idea.

The map is good, but DeLeon should be switched with DeLeon City.

Fixed.
Now how many members does the House of Equals have, and how are they elected? I can draw up single-member constituencies, since I think that's what you were getting at with your original post.
Does Cyrencia have a directly-elected executive, or is it a parliamentary system?
Note: In your original post, Dr Cynic, you specified that

Population is rougly 2\3rds of the U.S.
This is not so with my statistics, but it seems a little ridiculous that Canada/Cyrencia could support two hundred million people.

Here's a possible constituency map, with latest election results in which the SDP/PDS regained control of the House of Equals. If you like it, there will be more statistics to come.

I'm not big on numbers so what you have is fine by me...
House of Equals should have around 70 members. Parliamentary system. Elected through proportional representation.

Province based.
List PR
St. Lague
Every 4 years (Though the calender can be sped up game wise and the PM has the option to call an early election)

It wasn't, but it also wasn't my baby and I've found it very difficult to kick start something that wasn't mine to begin with.
Those in the game have guaranteed spots, and as soon as we get everything final, you can pick your name and party and brief bio if you wish.

Applying the Sainte-Lague method for seat allocation to the provinces with 70 seats, I get the following representations in the HoE. I gave minimum representation of 2 seats to Westsnow and Atlantica.
Fontaine 24
DeLeon 17
Valentine 12
Meredith 7
Northern Fontaine 6
Westsnow 2
Atlantica 2
Perhaps the next step is to have interested participants choose home states, a Cyrencian persona and start an election campaign for the House of Equals?

Yep. Although we'll all pretty much be serving. Once everyone's signed in that expressed interest (I'll wait a couple days for that unless we really get a lot off the bat), we'll begin the campaign for PM.
