Like I said awhile back on this forum (Summer 2009 or so) support for marriage equality is probably going to come quicker than any of us could ever realize.  I mean the Civil Rights movement was on standby until right after World War II and in only 20 years the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and Loving V. Virginia all succeeded.
Ultimately gay marriage is likely to come to a national referendum as it gains more ground nationwide.

"National Referendum"? No such animal, old chap. It'll come by way of either 50 state by state victories, a ruling from the Supremes a la Loving v. Virginia, or a national act of Congress. My guess is a LONG period of the former, followed by either courts or Congress dragging the last few deep south states and Utah kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.
