By some miracle Anderson beats out Reagan in the Republican primaries.  In response, Reagan launches an independent campaign.  VP picks are up to you.  How does the general election turn out?

Reagan would run a much stronger Independent campaign than Anderson did would draw away a lot of southern conservative Democrats from Carter. However this would likely just end up like 1912 with the GOP's division handing victory to the Democrats. The only difference would be Carter isn't pure evil like Wilson was.
