The next major 2012 presidential candidate "cattle call" will be the Family Research Council-hosted "Values Voter Summit", to be held on Sept. 17-19 in DC.  DeMint, Santorum, Bachmann, Pence, McDonnell, Huckabee, and Romney are all scheduled to speak, with Pawlenty also speaking via video:

http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2010/09/huckabee_faces.php

Last year's event included a straw poll, which was won by Huckabee.  This list of names on this year's straw poll has been released:

Odd list.  Brewer and Rubio are included, but not Barbour or Thune?

2. Mike Huckabee 22%
3. Mitt Romney 13%
4. Newt Gingrich 10%

"Values voters" -- people who vote against abortion but have no problem with an economy hostile to helpless children.

Most likely a win for Huckabee again, with the smaller likelihood of a Ron Paul upset.

Barbour and Thune's names have been added to the straw poll ballot.  Also, Pawlenty's name has been removed at his request:

He'll be on a trade trip to China at the time of the conference, and he presumably doesn't want to be embarrassed by a poor showing in the straw poll.

Fwiw, all of the prospective 2012ers who are speaking at this thing have delivered their speeches now (except Gingrich), and the buzz is that DeMint and Pence got the best receptions of anyone from the people attending the meeting:

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/09/demint-outshines-huckabee-at-values-voter-summit/63163/

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/09/values-voters-go-gaga-for-mike-pence/63169/

Whether that'll actually translate into support in the straw poll, I don't know.

Whew, when I didn't see Romney even on Top 5, I was getting worried. Thank heavens he was at least third! Smiley Not bad considering the people who were voting in this. What makes me even more happy is that only 7% voted for Palin.

How much of this is determined by who actually showed up? Who are these activists anyway? If they don't represent the tea party this poll is worthless.

You can take my word for it that Romney is one of the worst governors Massachusetts has had within living memory, and he'd be an equally awful president.  That's not my ideology speaking - I nearly always prefer Republican governors - he was just objectively an awful governor.

I've been talking up Pence's primary chances for a while, because of his tarp opposition and strong appeal to social cons and tea crazies.  I could see him winning Iowa but  he'll almost definitely not run if Daniels jumps in.

Doesn't matter; these "Values Voters" are out of touch with the direction of the country and the tea party movement. After voting to end "don't ask, don't tell", Ron Paul obviously wasn't going to do well here.

Seriously, Mike Pence? He is undoubtedly one of the stupidest members of Congress. Listen to him do an interview or something; there's nothing up there.
