Chris Coons stood up the public employee unions and cut budgets deeply on the New Castle County council. For example, on April 23 2009, well before politics, Resolute Determination, a blog created to [offer] "a center-right perspective on politics and policy concerning Delaware and the nation", praised Chris Coons, saying:

Thank you Mr. Coons!   This is a step in the right direction.  Either we need to reduce salaries or eliminate positions.  You gave them the choice and they picked layoffs.

This is not just about O'Donnell. Coons is a responsible money manager who will listen to the people and stand up to the unions when it's necessary.

actually, most parents share the same concerns when their kids go off to college.  so I live this piece as a positive, even in DE.

They may share their concerns, but they also think that grownups who obsess about these issues and related ones (as Christine does) can be creepy and perhaps not who they're looking for in office. Her terminology here is definitely closer to "creepy" than "concerned parent," to boot.

with her looks, she aint creepy when talking about sex

She is hot yeah, but voting based solely on looks is the most shallow, despicable thing a person can do, and if you would do that you shouldn't say anything about politics.

The problem is less the merits of what she is saying, than the fact that we have a narrative that she says insane things, and the media can keep digging them up. This is not the narrative that a serious person wants driving the campaign.

PS: She thinks Dinosaur fossils are fake.

she did NOT say dinosaur fossils are fake.  She simply said carbon dating can be corrupted by volcanoes and that she believes God created the earth in 6 24 hour periods.  Neither of which I agree with, but that has nothing to do with the issues she will face in the Senate.

Carbon dating is one of the most established practices in science. These kinds of comments raise questions about her ability to be objective and whether she will insert religion into government. In fact the answer to these questions is undoubtedly 'no' and 'yes'.

One has to admit that social issues really have fallen down the ladder this year. That became apparent last fall when the publicization of McDonnell's sexist thesis failed to make the impact that it ordinarily would have made in an area like northern Virginia.

Of course, in O'Donnell's case, her issues are more document and serious than McDonnell's, or Nikki Haley's for that matter, but the best approach for Coons might be to tie them with public policy issues- i.e., if she's irresponsible with her own money, can she really be trusted with the voters' money? If she's lied in court, can she really be trusted not to lie in a campaign? Contrast that with Coons' responsible management of the New Castle county budget, which most Delaware voters should be familiar with. Faced with a massive post recession shortfall, the county is now in excellent fiscal condition and is running a small surplus. It has an AAA rating from Fitch, higher than either of Delaware's other two counties, which praised New Castle for its "responsible debt management."
