It questions her sanity, and her competence.  Also, it is not a politically appealing position in a sane state like Delaware.

actually, according to Gallup, only 39% of Americans believe in evolution.

so, the majority of Americans don't believe that scientists understand things in the past they werent' there to witness.  

and a presumably large portion of that 39% believe something on the basis of one author's description from the bible... which they also weren't there to witness.
