The Atlas statistics page only does Obama, McCain, Nader, Barr, Write-ins and Baldwin. Does anyone know McKinney's top five counties?

Not sure how accurate this is, but I found this Googling. This is by percentage, rather than vote, though.

St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana   149   1.10%
Lafourche Parish, Louisiana   406   1.07%
Humboldt County, California   646   1.01%
Allen Parish, Louisiana   92   0.97%
Evangeline Parish, Louisiana   150   0.94%
Hamilton County, Illinois   38   0.89%
Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana   146   0.86%
Mendocino County, California   341   0.85%
Jackson County, Illinois   215   0.84%
Assumption Parish, Louisiana   92   0.84%
St. Martin Parish, Louisiana   196   0.81%
Yell County, Arkansas   47   0.78%
Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana   316   0.78%
Perry County, Arkansas   33   0.77%
Vermilion Parish, Louisiana   185   0.74%

So, her strongest 16 counties are all in Arkansas, California, Illinois, and Louisiana. Other than California, I don't get why she did so well in any of those states (including Illinois, given home stater Barack Obama).

Mendocino and Humboldt are no-brainers. But neither McKinney (GA) nor her running mate Clemente (NY) did well in their home states. The LA/AR parishes/counties don't even have substantial Black populations.

McKinney wasn't even on the ballot in her home state IIRC.

Illinois has a strong Green Party, and Arkansas has many races where the Green Party is the only challenger.

Could be, the best explanation for these being McKinney's best counties is likely a small number of Hillary Democrats angry over the primary, but refusing to support a Republican. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that makes sense of McKinney's numbers in these places.

If you map it out, McKinney's strength in Louisiana is mostly concentrated in Cajun-dominated parishes.

Isn't there some kind of odd Green strength in AR and LA due to the fact that the Democrats there are conservative and you get a few liberals here and there voting for the Greenies instead?

And yeah, perhaps the fact that the AR Green Party is often the only opposition to Democrats in a lot of races probably gets them more attention from the average voter.

Cajuns voting for a Black/Hispanic Green ticket?

This is absolutely true in AR, and now in IL as well. But Louisiana has not had a Green candidate for Governor or Senate in at least a decade.

PUMAs. At least McKinney has an ordinary American name. Most of them probably hardly knew who she is.

It's just that her base support (and campaign fund) was so low that these wackos majorly affect her result.

Fulani did unusually well in Dixie, mainly MS!

I think her candidacy did some real damage to the Green Party. Nominating a whacko like her could send a once viable third party into the abyss to join the Reform Party.

Illinois has a strong Green Party, and Arkansas has many races where the Green Party is the only challenger.

Given the unsurprising tendency of McKinney's best counties to be in states with relatively strong Green Parties, it is slightly interesting that none of her best counties are from Maine, which has perhaps the strongest state Green Party.

McKinney got 0.4% in Maine, the second best state for her after Louisiana.

She did "well" in CA, OR, HI, NM, IL, SC, DC, WV, MA, ME, LA and AR - all states which (except Louisiana) have (or had) strong Green Parties.

I can't find a sample ballot from the election to show, but McKinney's randomly high returns in Louisiana is almost certainly due to her good ballot positioning. Unlike most states that place major party nominees at the top, Louisiana orders all valid candidates alphabetically. Thus, McKinney was right between McCain and Obama so got a lot more focus for voters looking to make a random protest vote than the other "nobody" candidates filling the top of the ballot.

They appear to have stolen the Green Party of Canada's sunflower logo, however. (Yes, the sunflower is pretty universal for greens, but the GPC sunflower and the GPLA sunflower have the exact same design.)

I never thought of the ballot order making a difference, but I'm still surprised at St. Bernard being McKinney's top parish / county. (And to think last year we had a moronic judge accusing St. Bernard of being racist.)

Here's a map of how well the third party candidates did in Louisiana.

Green:  McKinney

Grey: Nader

Pink: Paul
