I've been watching C-SPAN 3 online... I mean - this is a waste of Congress's time.  It's a mockery of the Congressional system.  Sure, I've been able to get some laughs in, but the Democrats look like FOOLS for this.

Kudos to John Conyers (D-MI) for asking Colbert to leave.

And Judy Chu just justified bringing Colbert in citing 3 things:

Republicans bringing in Clint Eastwood to discuss ADA lawsuits
Loretta Swit to discuss crush vidoes
Something about Elmo (not sure what she was talking about here).

I'll probably agree with her on Elmo being stupid to bring in, but Eastwood was a legitimate witness, as he was involved in an ADA lawsuit, and Swit was legitimate, since she's been involved in animal rights activities.

Colbert was a worker for one day - having him in Congress is ridiculous.

Well, it's not like the Senate is going to pass anything they would do anyway, so might as well get some entertainment. Tongue

I admit it's pretty dumb, but I do like Colbert so I'm not going to complain.

Indeed.  Let's make a big, serious deal about this.

The GOP let Elmo testify before Congress in 2002.

Insulting, but it's about what I'd expect from congress.

Even Colbert seemed to realize the ridiculousness of it. I must say that he gave the best congressional testimony I have ever seen. Tongue

I watched some of his answers to questions, and there was one where he broke out of character, and I think his testimony was quite interesting, and perhaps even helpful (as helpful as any testimony before Congress is)

Court jesters were occasionally able to make salient and valid points through their medium, States.

That's the whole point of his tv show.

I know that, but I'm employing the 'court jester' metaphor here because he was actually performing his act inside the 'court'.

Mocking it is the best one can do, given the system and the electorate.

Congress is used to having their time wasted.  At least with Colbert, there's a valid point to be made somewhere within the satire.

shrug, if the Dems wanna shore up a lot of support for immigration reform, Colbert can easily get his die hard viewers motivated.

Why is this the response I keep hearing?  Do the Democrats really want to be the party that says, "The Republicans did something stupid 8 years ago, so now we decided to do something stupid too."  Come on!  Instead of shifting the focus to an event 8 years ago (an event that should not have happened either), address what's going on now.

This has pretty much been the Democrats' excuse for everything they've done since taking power. "Bush did it too!" certainly seems to be their refrain every time Obama does something idiotic/destructive.

Why do you keep saying that both incidents were "stupid"?

I agree, if only because the comparison is absurd.  If you are unable to look past the satirical personality and discern the point of Colbert's testimony, that is your own downfall.

Simply put, he has a point, no matter how much of his character he injects into it.  Now, let's see if Congress was actually smart enough to understand said point.

Elmo testified?  No shit?  Colbert and Eastwood are bad enough, but Elmo?  That's funny.
