The article says that the lifespan of a sign is a decade and they have until 2018 to replace them all. What's the problem? If they're giving them almost 10 years to do it, that indicates it means no extra cost, and the new signs are more readable.

Uh, why should the lifespan of a roadsign be only ten years? Unless they're really, really shoddily manufactured?

It could be that the printing of the name on the background takes a beating and the letters either darken or peel off.

This is quite possibly the most pointless executive order I've ever seen.

It's an executive order? Did President Bush issue it?

Anyway, readability like this is the kind of issue that a layman may not be able to properly assess, but can be a serious issue for people with visual impairments (like some pedestrians) or normal drivers looking at a distance.

Or maybe a sign manufacturer donated heavily to the Bush campaign in 2000.

Yes, but presumably your signs are made in Germany.

Uh, remind me again where Bush 43 signed in Executive Order into existence?  Or is it something from the Transportation Department.

I didn't think he did. Someone else said "executive order" and I didn't think that was what happened.
