In 1976, Washington Senator Henry M Jackson wins the Democratic nomination, chooses Texas Senator Lloyd Bensten for Vice-President, and beats incumbent President Gerald R Ford. Things go generally as they did in real life, however, the hostage crisis is wrapped up by the election, and foreign relations are much better, and America is more respected in the world as opposed to real life. In 1980, Jackson is re-nominated and former Califorani Governor Ronald Reagan is the Republican nominee, and George Bush is the Vice-Presidential nominee. Who wins?

I say Reagan/Jackson

I say Jackson could have won because Reagan only won with 50% of the vote in what was an electoral landslide. Jackson probably would've handled the debates better and come off as more Presidential than Carter ever did. I can see it going both ways, though.

No President, whether it would be Carter, Reagan, Ford or Scoop, under these circumstations, would survive 1980.

Reagan would have won but the election would have probably been a mirror image of 1976: very, very close.
Jackson was a much more skilled and respected politician than Carter and had a lot of fans among Republicans.
