Northeast Lefties Blink; Hopes Sink
With a little over 20% of the vote reporting, it appears that the blink by several lefties in the last days of the campaign has left rightists free to vote for ColinW secure in the belief that at the worst MAS117 willwin the governorship or a runoff.  Instead of preventing a Republican victory, the fractured left may have given the GOP the spoils of office because of blatant tactical voting of a few.

Will Midwest History Repeat?
With the  last minute write-in candidacy of Dabeav will former Governor Ilikeverin suffer the humiliation of losing twice despite being the only name on the ballot or can he regain the office he was so rudely denied last August?  Unlike last time observers had thought that he was assurred victory this time, but he holds only a narrow one vote lead over the Libertarian VP candidate, as we go to press.

Ilikeverin Can Breathe Again
In the latest results, Ilikeverin has secured at least a runoff, in the unlikely event that one should prove necessary, thus making his re-Governorship likely.

Leaks from the Mansion
Sources inside the Magnolia Mansion have told this paper that the Governor's staff is exploring whether the decision in Fritz v. Ernest leaves Federal lands subject to property tax.  They have also informed this paper that the Governor has been trying to contact Amanda Bearse, most famous for playing Marcy on the show Married with Children.  It does not appear that he is doing so in connection with the Five Star game of the Southeastern Lottery.  While the actress was born in Winter Park, Florida, sources tell us that actors will not appear on the initial run of ticket sales, making a Lottery connection dubious.

MAS117 Staff Worried Despite Lead
With a one vote lead at press time, members of the MAS117 campaign staff have revealed their worries to our reporter.  "It was stupidly noble of him to question the validity of that new voter," said one.  "ColinW for Lieutenant Governor?  I came here from Maryland explicitly to deny that Radical Republican any office.  I'll be mighty upset if he's put just one step away from the Governor's chair," said another.

More Leaks from the Mansion
Aides for the Governor indicate that he has a grudging respect for the Attorney General's political acumen.  He was also overheard at a recent dinner to say, "In the abstract, it might be best if the Southeastern piglet were weaned from the Federal tit, but politics is like art; the makers appreciate the abstract, but the public don't."
Sources also indicate that the Governor is not happy at the lack of diversity in the initial group of proposed celebrities proposed by the Lottery Commission staff to appear on the Five Star game.  "Surely there ought to be an African-Southeasterner besides Charley Pride on this list?" is he is said to have inquired angrily at a recent meeting.

MAS117 and Ilikeverin Elected Governors
MAS117 was elected Northeastern Governor this weekend and has already been sworn in.  There is already plenty on the Governor's desk.  In addition to the work of Senate Redistricting, MAS117 has indicated that election reform, the selection of a Lieutentant Governor, and other issues to be announced will be part of his agenda.
Ilikeverin easily won the Midwest special election and has already chosen a Lieutenant Governor, Clay, who before he was placed into a witness protection progam and changed his name and residence, won office in the pre-Constitution days as Southeastern Governor GWBFan of Georgia.  However, it is unclear what, if anything, besides redistricting that the re-Governor hopes to accomplish in the less than a month before he must run again to re-retain his re-office.

Ex-VP Supersoulty Living at Happydale
It appears now that the reason for former Vice-President supersoulty's sudden departure from Atlasian politics was a decent into madness.  Indeed, he is busy creating his own little fantasy world with hopes of drawing in others into his delusions.  However, he is still a vice-president as sources inform this paper that he has taken to believing that he is Charles W. Fairbanks and shares a room at the Happydale Sanitarium with a man who believes that he is Theodore Roosevelt.

MAS117 Speech Highly Anticipated
Speculation is buzzing over who MAS117 will choose to be his Lieutenant Governor.  Early speculations that ColinW would be chosen have dimmed with his announcement of a run for Senate in the upcoming mid-term elections.  Rumors have been swirling today that MAS117 will try to mend fences with libertarian-minded voters by choosing bandarikin04 of New Hampshire, but have not been confirmed by press time.
The Governor's press secretary has only said that MAS117 will name his choice in his speech tonight which will also lay out his agenda for his term.  Anticipation over the naming of the Lieutenat Governor is expected to raise the ratings higher than would otherwise expected of a display of policy wonking.

Amendments All Look Likely to Pass
The Peter Bell Amendments are both well on their way to passage and The Region is ready to project that they will pass.  The Organized Party Amendment looks likely to pass, but the margin is slim enough that a late surge of anti-party activists could defeat it, so we are not prepared to call that referendum at this time.

MAS117 Speech Shocks Northeast
As expected MAS117 chose a Lieutenant Governor with an eye to mending fences with another political party.  However, what no one expected that the fence to be mended would be with the UAC as he announced his departure from that party to join the Democrats.  Naming ex-Senator Nation to be his Lieutenant Governor however has done little to quell the flames of incensed voters and there have been mutters made by some of recall or impeachment.  While they are not likely to succeed in ousting MAS117 from office before his term is up, his chances of being re-elected in an Northeastern Region that has been growing more conservative of late looks to be in doubt.

Supersoulty Returns
Former Vice President Supersoulty appears to have checked out of one lunatic asylum and returned to the asylum called politics.  He has formed a new party, the  Atlas Freedom Party which has laid out planks related to the famous Four Freedoms.  However it is unclear what truly distinguishes the AFP from being a party for Rockwell Republicans given the warm embrace given to Supersoulty by the GOP establishment.

Districting Plans Near Approval
Plans J, K, and K1 are currently being voted upon by the Governors.  With three Governors having voted, Plan K appears to be the early favorite, but any of the three could win approval.  While some voters can't say which districts they will end up being a part of, even assuming one of these three plans is adopted, most can make plans, if they don't live in the midwest.  The common features of the three plans are given by the map below, with the green states being those whose district varies depending upon the plan.

Senate Continutes to Dawdle
The Senate continues to see debate center on bills that are meaningless until a powers amendment is approved to remedy the defects of the Atlasian Constitution brought to light in the Fritz v. Ernest case instead of a powers amendment itself.  Perhaps the Senate prefers the lack of responsibility.  In general, it certainly isn't showing a sense of responsibility.

Southeastern Symbols Set for Survey
Governor Ernest announced from the Magnolia Mansion that the magnolia blossom that the Southeastern Governor's official residence is named for is one of four representative icons that will be presented to the voters for their approval this December as our Region flower.  The mockingbird has been proposed as our Region bird and the longleaf pine as our Region tree.  In addition, the quartz crystal was chosen to be our Region crystal.  Governor Ernest had these word to say about the choice of quartz while talking with our reporter.
“It was initially difficult for me to determine which genstone, if any I would include in this proposal.  I wanted to choose symbols that were in use by at least two of our ten fine States.  By the literal letter of the various State laws, all ten had chosen something different.  However, a liberal interpretation, allowed me to find a single gemstone that would also express the diversity of the Southeast, by selecting the generic quartz crystal  to be placed before the voters.  Alabama and South Carolina have chosen specific colors of quartz crystal to be their gemstones.  Florida and Louisiana include the agate form of quartz among their state symbols.  Mississippi and Texas honor petrified wood which is most commonly created of quartz.  And finally, the great State of Georgia has already made use of the ability of quartz to be both a symbol of unity and diversity by specifying the quartz crystal, without reference to any single color as its State gemstone.”

Districting Plan Approved
Plan K was the plan adopted by the governors late yesterday.  Southeastern voters will notice few changes as they will still all be in Distrct 4 as shown below.  Instead of Oklahoma and Virginia being the States outside our region that enjoy the advantage of sharing the privledge of electing Senators with our fine electorate, Oklahoma and New Mexico will do so in the next two Senatorial elections.  The modest changes are predicted to have little net effect on the race that is forming in District 4.  Incumbent Senator Harry is currently facing Union Party candidate Hermit in what looks like will shape up to be a close race.  While rumors abound of other candidates entering the race, including Richard Nixon of Texas, and John Dibble of Georgia, so far these rumors are only that.

Mideast Race Begins
Despite the fact that three other Regions will hold Gubernatorial races this December, the only officially announced candidate for Governor is DanielX who has entered the race for the Mideast election to be held in January.  While it is expected that all three incumbents who terms end next month will be running for re-election in December, it appears that one challenger at least has determined that a lengthy campaign will be needed to unseat NickG if he should choose to run for another term.

Aircraft Vote In Progress
The bill to increase funding for a naval variant of the F-22 Raptor and to accelerate development of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, looks like it is headed to easy passage in the Senate.
The concept of a multiservice combat aircraft is a fine one.  The F-4 and A-7 are both examples of successful multiservice aircraft.  However, both were Navy designs that were adopted by the Air Force.  The restrictions imposed by carrier operations have proved problematic in the past for attempts to stretch those restrictions to satisfy Air Force desires.   However, we are hopeful that the Pentagon has learned from past attempts at producing multiservice aircraft such as the F-111 that have ended in costly failure.
In addition, with the majority of the construction for the F-22 taking place at the Lockhhed Martin facilities in Marietta, GA and Fort Worth, TX, these programs should prove helpful to the Southeastern economy even as they improve the defense of Atlasia.

The Northeastern legislature will never accept the regional government constructing factories to compete with our private citizens.

I'm guessing that he's misinterpretted the green areas on the map in the Nov. 18 issue as a 6th district.

Senator Texasgurl To Pursue A More Partisan Course
Senator Texasgurl said yesterday that she's mad as hell and she's not going to take this any more.  The this in question appears to have been whispers from all sides of the political spectrum that her efforts at multipartisanship were being cynically taken advantage of by those who benefitted from them and that were not being appreciated by her political soulmates.  In response the Senator has indicated that she will be taking a more partisan line that she has been.  How this will affect the day-to-day business of the Senate remains to be seen.

Constitutional Amendments Pass
The Peter Bell Amendments and the Organized Party Amendment have been adopted by convincing margins all.  These procedural amendments and the powers amendment now being debated in the Senate should enable the Senate to return to a discussion of policy instead of procedure.

Well, I don't think the political compass is a good test as its questions are so badly worded, but I show up on the center on that test.  Economic: 0.50 Social: 0.56 the last time I took it, but IIRC the time before that I had one score that was slightly negative.
