FYI that Minnesota map has only 7 districts. It probably looked something like this:

(2000 map. Borders didn't change much in the 1991 redistricting from what I've heard)

The 4th definitely didn't expand that far north. The 4th now is basically just Ramsey County, at the time it was probably St. Paul plus about half of the remaining part of Ramsey County, "a few northern suburbs".

But anyway great work!

You're right, that does look much better.  Thanks  Smiley

Pennsylvania

Mondale won almost 90% of the vote in the Second district (Philly), and won 68% of the vote in Pennsylvania's 14th District (Pittsburg).

Isn't there an atlas of congressional elections? I recall seeing one in the local library (which is odd, since I live in Canada). It showed maps of all the elections and whatnot, and showed the boundaries.

That's interesting; Gore didn't carry the old South Milwaukee district in 2000.

Maybe Reagan's attitude toward Poland and other Soviet controlled nations hurt him in the district (a lot of the district's population was of Polish ancestry).

But I agree, the swing to Bush is fascinating.

I would have thought most Polish-Americans would have been in favour of Reagan's foreign policy, even if they were Democratic on economic issues. But who knows.

Polish Americans liked the Polish commies about as much as Cuban Americans like Castro. Most viewed the PRP as an instrument of Russian occupation. More likely they were unionized industrial labor for whom Mondale was actually a good candidate, and were more reluctant to vote for Dukakis, who had weaker credentials in that area.

True, but I was thinking Polish Americans may have seen Reagan as a threat to everyone in Poland, not just the communists.  But that was just a guess.

Mississippi

Mondale lost the Second Congressional District by a hair (less than 2,000 votes)

He also hit 41% in the 4th C.D., which contained Downtown Jackson.

Utah

Mondale hit 31% in the 2nd congressional district (Salt Lake City and Suburbs), his best showing out of all of Utah's three districts.

The other two districts went 78%-22% (1st) and 77%-22% (3rd) for Reagan.

Ouch.

North Carolina

Mondale lost the 2nd Congressional District (Durham and other areas)  by 6%.  It was the only district where he came within single digits.

Rhode Island

Mondale lost the 1st district by about 1% (the Easternmost one) and lost the 2nd by about 6%.

Both of Rhode Island's congressional districts contained part of Providence.

(AKA   sorry about the weird purple-blue colors.  My new paint application screws up the colors)

All this is very interesting. Wink For NC, did Reagan get >50% in 3 districts and >70% in other 8 ? That's weird.

The book I'm currently using doesn't have the CDs for New York City.  I'll have to get my other one, which is loaned out.

Thank you! Cheesy    I'll be able to complete this map tonight, possibly.
