There's a statewide race here in Massachusetts that's looking increasingly likely to go Republican. It's not the governorship, but the open-seat race for State Auditor.

It was looking like something of a generic R vs. generic D race a few months ago, until the Democratic candidate's campaign started falling apart at the seams. The first problem was a revealation that Dem-nominee Suzanne Bump was improperly claiming two different houses as her primary residence, taking tax breaks on both. Then, the Boston Globe reported that Bump's campaign was worst in the state in terms of reporting required donor information -- perhaps something you'd expect an auditor to be up on. Her troubles, combined with the resume of her opponent, CPA Mary Z. Connaughton, led to (literally) every newspaper in the state endorsing the Republican.

But, of course, you didn't click this thread to read about bad auditing practices. You clicked to find out the connection between Suzanne Bump and Satanic murders!

One poll released last week had Suzanne Bump up 2, another had her opponent, Mary Z. Connaughton, up 7.

Isn't Bump also not a CPA?

This is a pretty pathetic attack, but I'm not surprised, considering the source.

FWIW, the MA State GOP has filed an ethics complaint here against Bump.

GOP cries ethics foul on Suzanne Bump

Mwah, this isn't too fresh a story. But on the other hand you have to give her credit for having at least some guts and standing up for the principle of re-integration of convicted felons. It always seems to me that America is just a bit too happy to make these people pay for the rest of their lives.

However, a satanic cult killer???

How did I guess the link was to the Herald based on the first paragraph of the story? The photo of her they chose to illustrate it is priceless, too.

I know this has nothing to do with her role as Auditor, but how do you feel about the fact that Connaughton signed up for the anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment?

Definitely not a fan, but it's consistent with her position on the issue in 2004 -- "let the people decide."

Whatever the case, gay marriage is an entirely irrelevant issue in a race for State Auditor.  Whether or not one is, in fact, a Certified Public Accountant, is in fact a very relevant issue.  Hence why every newspaper in the state has endorsed Connaughton.

Yes and no. It has zero to do with her qualifications for State Auditor. I did raise it because of a) Mr. Moderate's personal support for her, which isn't really significant and which we've discussed elsewhere, and b) if she is the only statewide elected Republican coming out of this election, I really don't want a specifically anti-gay Republican to have a platform to run for governor in 2014. But I make no pretense that my vote was up for grabs, or that this is a wider concern for voters or relevant to how she'd perform the job.

If anyone ran for governor in MA on an anti-gay marriage platform, he or she would be crushed.  If he or she somehow won, they wouldn't have any luck on that issue given the huge Democratic supermajorities in both houses.

Scott Brown shows how hostility to gays can manifest itself in a dozen other small acts and decisions rather than taking a no-hope position on a settled issue at a state level. I prefer candidates who don't have a "tell" that they're hostile to gay rights. Anyway, this is getting silly, because I don't get a say in who the Republicans choose to put at the top of their ticket, this isn't the full story about Mary Z., and even with Baker not coming from an anti-gay angle, I'm not voting for him anyway...
