Too bad. He was one of the few big name people on the Bush administration I liked. Hope they can replace him with someone good.

If Joe Biden would behave himself, I'd have no problem putting him there.

No. However, it was very difficult for Kissinger to serve in both capaicty in 1972, imagine how hard it would be today...

We (over here in the office) were wondering if Powell resigned just to clear himself for a possible other position, like the intelligence "czar."  Or maybe he's finally convinced his wife to keep quiet and let him run in 2008.

I thought Colin Powell said nearly a year ago that he did not plan to serve in another Bush administration. Is it my imagination or didn't he say he would be leaving as far back as January?

It could be my imagination but I thought he said it even before January.

divided government is good government.  still, I don't think he's a dem.  and I doubt he's the legislative type, anyway.

Acctually, he stated as early as 2001 that he intended to stay for no more than one term.

Ummm ... then why on 8/4/03 did he deny rumors he wouldn't stick around for a 2nd term?

Sleepy, here is what he really said:

"I serve at the pleasure of the president. The president and I have not discussed anything other than my continuing to do my job for him."

An interesting idea. Clever, Al! Or perhaps he could become special envoy to the Middle East.

"I serve at the pleasure of the president. The president and I have not discussed anything other than my continuing to do my job for him."

Silly me ... reading the first paragraph and all.

"Secretary of State Colin Powell dismissed as gossip and nonsense a published report that he had sent word to the White House he would not serve in a second Bush administration."

And then of course there was this part ...

"This is just one of those stories that emerge in Washington that reflects nothing more than gossip, and the gossip leads to a rash of speculation about who might fill a vacancy that does not exist," Powell said in an interview with Radio Sawa, which broadcasts to the Arab world with U.S. financial support.

Saying Powell didn't lead people to believe he was sticking around is the same as saying Clinton didn't have sex w/ Monica.

you're really itching to see Hillary gone.

she'd win in a race against powell, I'm afraid.  America's Mayor is a better matchup for the Clinton machine.

Sleepy, I am looking at what Powell is saying.  You quoting, largely, what the reporter is saying.  They was no vacancy to fill when Powell made the comment.

You are quite silly.

Saying Powell didn't lead people to believe he was sticking around is the same as saying Clinton didn't have sex w/ Monica.

I believe that was Clinton's position.

"Mr. Speaker, you may infer from mah previous statement that ah did not have sex with that woman, as ah understood the taarm to be duhfahned."

Clinton was great.  I'd have voted for him a third time, if I could.  Just for the entertainment value.  I'd vote for Bush again next time too, if I could.  I love controversy.  Just think, one day we won't have presidents that cause such division as these last two, and what a boring blogosphere it will be then.
