Alvin Greene's best county in the state. He won 68.57% in it. 68.57% for Alvin Greene. ALVIN GREENE.

This is truly a Freedom County and a wonderful place. I hope to visit there one day.

2.97%

Why would anyone vote for him over the great ALVIN GREENE though?

Interestingly, according to the exits, more black people voted for Clements than whites.

Your visit will be truly appreciated.  Allendale County is a place that was absolutely ruined by the Interstate Highway System.  Back before I-95 was built on a totally different alignment, US 301 was the major highway used by folks traveling from the Northeast down to Florida.  Allendale had a bunch of those pre-chain locally owned motels as it was a good stopping point that was roughly one day's travel north of Florida.  Along comes I-95 and even before it was built it had a chilling effect on the local economy.  No one was willing to build new motels or make improvements on businesses that would be effectively worthless once I-95 was finished.  As of the last time I went through there, there were several old run-down dilapidated abandoned motels still standing, along with a few that were still in business and barely surviving on the nostalgia trade.

So once upon a time, Allendale was a thriving community on a major highway, but now it's way in the boondocks, well over an hour away from the nearest interstate.  The US 301 corridor is the most economically challenged part of our state, in large part because the Interstate Highway System screwed them over.

Another reason why I like the US route system. The real America is dead, what we have today is a joke.

What, only radical anti-government extremists would dare to say anything even slightly negative about the wonderful Nazi-inspired Interstate Highway System.

The old US Highways are cuter, but there's no way they could handle the modern American economy. In addition to being much more dangerous, there's just not the capacity for the traffic we have today. That said, I very much enjoy getting off the interstate and seeing some local color.

In addition to being much more dangerous,

Are their numbers to back that up? The interstate system has some horrific numbers.

The Interstate system also has much higher traffic.

Here a link to some data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics
http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transportation_statistics/html/table_02_18.html

On a per passenger mile basis, rural roads are about twice as dangerous as urban roads of the same class, and interstate highways are the safest class of all.

Road deaths have been falling for decades, and were truly, genuinely, horrifying in the 50s and 60s and 70s. Of course not all of that is due to better roads, a lot is due to better cars. Going to be difficult to tear apart.

Yes, they had that posted up at our work. Highway fatalities are the lowest last year since like 1952 or thereabout.

While Godwin's Law is usually the Libertas game, he's right here.  The modern interstate system was invented by the Nazis.  That doesn't make it bad, though.

Throughout my forum experience, I have determined that these two theories are infallible (especially with people like Libertas here).

That was my point. I was also going to link "Hitler Ate Sugar," but I don't want anymore lives to be ruined.

The German interstate system was certainly not invented by the Nazis. Hitler (or somebody near him, more likely) merely had the good sense of speeding the planned construction up somewhat, as a work-creation measure.

Well everything I have seen between Charleston and the Upcounty is depressing - flat, drab, poor and somnolent. The churches were really busy however (I drove through the area on a Sunday). It was kind of interesting to see the rather Spartan smallish white wood steeple churches, packed with folks in the Sunday best - and totally segregated of course, like everywhere else. Columbia was no great shakes either. I have not been up to Greenville, and that part of the state however, including where Clemson is parked in the far inland corner of the state.
