According to Real Clear politics and those familiar with political happenings in Missouri,  Jim Talent who was defeated by Clare McCaskill in the Democratic wave year of 2006. Is gearing up for another run against her in 2012, especially since polls indicate that both her and Obama are very unpopular in the state indicating that McCaskill may have a tough reelection ahead of her, and even an uphill climb if trends continue.

Jim Talent is one of the first politicians I remember, as I remember his run back in 2002. I've always really admired the man because of that, though I can honestly say I don't know a lot about him. I hope he decides to run.

Talent's never had much talent for campaigning. I'd be perfectly happy with him as the nominee.

Defeated US Senators seeking a rematch are always unsucessful- ask Rudy Boschwitz(R-MN)- who lost in 1990 to Paul Wellstone. got clobbered in a 1996 rematch.
If Talent wanted to run for US Senator-he could have ran this year.

Steelman should take him out in the primary.

Then again MN is a bluer and more liberal state then Missouri, and McCaskill's support for the Obama Administration has cost her dearly in the polls.

The key is the rural vote. Will they come out strong enough. My guess is they will show up to vote against Obama. I don't think McCaskil will be able to do as well among them as she did in 2006. Not with her votes and some of her statements.

Talent is probably the weakest candidates Republicans have here.

Well, technically Slade Gorton in WA returned, but that wasn't rematch.

Didn't Boschwitz have ethics problems, also?

Mr Slate initially got elected during the Reagan Landslide in 1980. unseating legendary DEM US Senator Warren Magnumson. He lost re-election in DEM wave in 1986-losing to Brock Adams.
In 1988-when WA other US Senate opend up due to a retirement- Mr Slate ran and narrowly won in 1988 against Mike Lowry. Gorton won re-election in 1994 during the GOP Wave.

It's Slade and he should be referred to as "Mr. Gorton".

Also, who let you out of your cage?

Unfortunately, when you look up the word "enervation" in the dictionary, Talent's mug shot is next to it.

Republicans need Sarah Steelman to run. She should have this year against that piece of garbage Roy Blunt, but I guess she wanted to spend some more time with her family. Seriously though Talent is damaged goods and shouldn't be nominated.

Oh yeah, I forgot about her. She'd be a good nominee.

I feel good about this race if he runs. Then again, I tend to put more faith in McCaskill's political skills than most.

Talent is not that strong a candidate, and the fact that he could beat (and might even be favored against) McCaskill says a lot more about her than it does about Talent.  Talent could win, but Steelman would be a stronger candidate, as others have already mentioned.  Some other possible Republican candidates are Congressman Sam Graves and State Auditor Tom Schweich (although I don't know if either of them, or Steelman for that matter, are interested).

I tend to think that McCaskill needs Obama to carry Missouri in order to win her race.  That's a high bar, to say the least.

Talent really isn't that strong a candidate.  He has run statewide 3 times.  In 2000, he barely lost the race for governor.  In 2002, he barely won the Senate race by 1 point when most of the polls showed he'd win in a walk.  In 2006, he lost to McCaskill by 3 points.  He didn't run a great campaign in 2006 either.
