I think it'd be a lot closer. Many Americans would be deeply worried by the rumors Napolitano is a lesbian. And with someone as...crazy as Gravel as her running mate, I think Fitzgerald would pull it off.

Tony Knowles would be a better VP choice from AK in my mind...

Tony Knowles would be a better VP choice from AK in my mind...

He lost his last two races.

Gravel had lost in 80, but that was a very bad year for Democrats nation-wide and Gravel had the AK Democratic establishment working against him too - plus, much like Palin, he would be a very controversial pick, so...

True, Gravel would me controversial, like Palin.

Still, with Knowles, AK was the only Democratic gubernatorial pickup in 1994. Thats pretty good. He lost in 2004, but he was very competitive with Murkowski though.

274 - 264

It would be very, very close, but I believe Fitzgerald would've pulled it off. Rumors concerning Napalitano's sexuality would mobilize the right-wing vote, and her rather insane pick of Gravel as a running-mate would keep a lot of Democrats (libertarian or otherwise) at home.

A Democratic ticket with Mike Gravel would be AWESOME!!! The dad of one of my friends is pretty much what I describe as a "Mike Gravel Democrat", or a Libeeral with Libertarian leanings, though he's slightly more pro-government thatn Gravel.
