He lost his last two races.

Gravel had lost in 80, but that was a very bad year for Democrats nation-wide and Gravel had the AK Democratic establishment working against him too - plus, much like Palin, he would be a very controversial pick, so...

True, Gravel would me controversial, like Palin.

Still, with Knowles, AK was the only Democratic gubernatorial pickup in 1994. Thats pretty good. He lost in 2004, but he was very competitive with Murkowski though.
