The Food and Drug Administration is poised to rule that caffeine is an unsafe additive for alcoholic beverages, Mr. Schumer, a fierce critic of the products, said in a news release.

Any bets as to whether this will encompass pre-mixed spirits & cola, or if that is a safe enough part of the drinking culture to remain untouched?  I hardly expect consistency from the clowns trying to protect us from ourselves.

I think this goes too far.  These drinks are fine as long as you're not downing more than you should be... which, you can say that about all alcoholic drinks.

I see Chuck Schumer is giddy with joy as usual at the expansion of government power over the choices of individuals.

I like how they assume alcohol is completely safe until you add caffeine.

Great. My university was instrumental in aiding this travesty. I'm sorry.

"Those incidents only prove what we have been saying for the last year, that the combination of alcohol and caffeine in a manufactured product is very dangerous," said Dr. Mary Claire O'Brien, a Wake Forest University researcher who has studied the drinks.

I've never seen the product in stores.  Is it sold in the alcohol section, or is it mixed with other canned drinks?  I say simply require that it be sold in the same stores/sections as hard liquor.  If a person old enough to buy it drinks too many and dies as a result, it's their own fault, just like if they were to do so with rum and cokes.  (Or are we going to start pulling all soft drinks off the shelves because they can be mixed with alcohol too?)

I've only seen it in liquor stores.  I've never bought one, but I mean... I feel like it's pretty hard to not realize it has alcohol in it (if you're buying it, you're getting carded, and even if you yourself don't buy it... it tastes like alcohol).

I've had half of one... wasn't really a fan.  Everybody kept saying "Even half of one will mess you up", but I was fine after.  I honestly think this is a severe overreaction.

I'll send an email to my congressman and senators.  I'm sure they'll all thank me for my support, and lend their voices to the unanimous vote to maintain total control over our personal decisions.  Then my name will appear on the approximately one million that are on the "terrorist watch list."

Ok, so it's not something a person would confuse with a soda or anything.  I see no reason for there to be a ban.  Maybe a periodic public service announcement, or require the company to print clearly on the front of the container the alcohol content, but that's about it.

Honestly, I don't get why "reason" has to manifest itself on internet forums that nobody reads and cares about. Why can't the media point out this idiocy? I mean, this is sh**t that directly affects our lives and impinges upon our utility.

USA Today's version of this article has a hilariously photoshopped-looking picture of Schumer with a Four.

I think I might have to take out $250 from my savings and go around town buying all remaining cans.

If I'm these drink companies, I think the best way to stay in business would be to replace the product with a powdered drink mix (just add vodka or whatever hard liquor works best).  The only way that could get banned is if they banned caffeine fo'reals.

Because the media consists of Good Morning America and Today ratings-hungry for scared moms who think of the world in terms of Naso's "why are people bad" thread.  Telling them that something won't kill their children would be blasphemous and bad business.

He actually did have a can with him during the press conference.

It's also interesting to note that it takes almost no time at all to determine that two legal substances are dangerous combined (and on their own), yet we still can't find any definitive proof that marijuana is even detrimental to our health.

Yeah, I'm not proud.  However, he was running against some tea partier, I was feeling generous toward the dems and Schumer's whining often leads to $ for New York. He is so annoying that I think Obama issued the disaster declaration for the tornadoes just to shut him up.

Uh, and let's not forget that Chucky Mucky gave us Attorney General Michael Mukasey.......it was his recommendation to the Bush White House that placed his name in nomination.....because the Bushies weren't that politically stupid not to nominate him.

Interestingly enough Umass D hasn't banned it, just recommended against it. You would think even with the wet campus policy they would have in a state so prone to this sort of inanity.

As someone who has worked for a Congressman, the unpaid interns in charge of reading your email have better things to do thatn inform the FBI that you need to be put on a terrorist watch list.
