some interesting findings:

candidates of whom people do not know enough to form an opinion:
Thune: 87% (85% of Republicans)
Daniels: 81% (79% R)
Pawlenty: 76% (72% R)
Barbour: 75% (73% R)
compare - Romney: 35% (26% R), Huckabee 33% (23% R), Gingrich 25% (20% R), Palin 10% (7% R), Obama 2% (1% R)

17% of conservatives would vote for Obama over Palin, 9% of liberals would vote for Palin over Obama.
Huckabee has the highest favorability among blacks for a Republican (17%). Romney has the highest for hispanics (34%).
Hispanics have a higher favorability of Barbour (19%) and  Thune (12%) than whites do (13%, 7%). almost as many hispanics (12%) as whites (14%) consider themselves a part of the Tea Party movement.
25% of Republicans and  26% of conservatives consider themselves a part of the Tea Party movement. 14% of independents do, but only 4% of moderates.
65% of Republicans have a favorable view of the movement, vs. 11% who have an unfavorable view.

Obama also has a 44-49 approval in this (already older) poll.

So, he gets at least the percentage of his approval in each matchup.

How on earth do 25% of the respondents not know enough about Newt Gingrich to form an opinion?

Well, the differences are small.  PPP found Palin doing slightly better with men than women.  Huckabee is the one who usually does the best with women.
