Switzerland is poised to vote on a controversial law that will allow for all immigrants – including European Union citizens – to be automatically expelled from the country if they commit a serious crime.

Benefit fraudsters and burglars are included in the proposed law, which opinion polls say is likely to be passed in a referendum next Sunday.

The pro-expulsion campaign involves posters featuring a black sheep being kicked out of the country by white sheep.

The referendum will be held almost exactly a year after a plebiscite banned the construction of new minarets.

The referendum proposal began to gain traction two years ago when three men from the Balkans beat a young carnival reveller to death in Locarno.

Switzerland's parliament, fearing repercussions from the EU and the wider world, has released an amended "counterproposal" with a list of serious crimes that would qualify a foreigner for expulsion.

But the Swiss People's Party, which has spearheaded the campaign for the law, is against any "dilution" of the proposals.

"Switzerland can't become a land of milk and honey for foreign criminals," said Walter Wobmann, an MP.

Currently, the SVP-proposal is backed by 54-43. The government counter proposal is going down by 43-49.

Sort of OT, but does anyone else think SVP MP Natalie Rickli is kinda hot:

She talks about the referendum here (I think), but alas, I am uncultured and cannot speak any language other than English. Sad

Just to be clear, foreign means "not a citizen of Switzerland", correct?

That isn't worse than Sarkozy who will revoke nationality of people naturalized French in case they commit big crimes toward 'representatives of order/state' (police in short)...

Well, nothing surprising from Switzerland either, and a good occasion to make noise around the association 'Foreign/Criminality'.

Sums it all:

You don't need to get French, set it at 3'50'':

I didn't know you were a SVP supporter.

Or better said: Why do you have a SVP poster in your sig that's calling for a "Double-No" in the referendum to introduce "Voting Rights for Foreigners" (which Basel and Bern actually rejected by wide margins in September) ?

Switzerland is really doing its best to earn my complete disrespect. No amount of mountains and humanist thinkers is a satisfying excuse for this kind of attempt to out-nazi Austria (sorry Tender Branson, but the FPO...).

lol, no. I just find their posters humorous. I'm sure Switzerland is being overrun by ghetto black people.

Tina Turner lives in Switzerland. I wonder if they'll force her out, too?

It looks like the Swiss electorate said "Yes" to the measure to throw out the criminal foreigners.

In Zürich, the measure leads by 60-40.

In Glarus, by 61-39.

In Basel-Land by 58-42.

In Aargau by 57-43.

...

The Glarus numbers are already the final results.
