Well why? Why vote for a criminal warmongerer over an anti-imperialist liberal hero?

Well why? Why vote for a criminal warmongerer over an anti-imperialist liberal hero?

I tried to do the list mostly without hindsight. If forced to pick between one of the two, I'd have voted for Nixon, if not, I'd just not vote at all. McGovern's campaign was perhaps one of the worst Presidential campaigns that I can recall, and though I'm generally against war, I'm also skeptical of candidates that base their entire campaign off the idea.

Plus, sans Watergate, Nixon was hardly a bad president. He supported the Equal Rights Amendment, completely eradicated the remnants of the Gold Standard, improved women's rights, wholeheartedly supported completely ending desegregation and introducing affirmative action programs, supported temporary wage and price control programs, eased tension with the Soviet Union and China, and even though he didn't get around to it until his second term, he ended conscription and the Vietnam War though he initially escalated it.

I think McGovern is great and support alot of what he wanted, but Nixon was very good at implementing what he wanted to do and had a far grander vision than just "end the war end the war end the war."

Today Goldwater would be considered an eeevil liberal RINO that must be expelled from the GOP by our tea-partying friends.   Not just because of his advocacy for sane social views later in his life, but Goldwater opposed JFK's tax cuts because he feared they would dramatically increase the deficit.  Nowadays there is no room in the Republican Party for anyone who opposes any sort of tax decrease.

Reagan was a moderately conservative President.  While I would have opposed him in '76 relative to Ford, overall he wasn't an extremist at all.

Straight Republican. The only time I would've voted Third Party might be 1992 or '96 out of protest, but aside from that, I would be voting Republican anyway.

Goldwater wanted the Kennedy tax cuts to be matched with spending decreases, and voted against them as a protest when they weren't.  I'm surprised you wouldn't support the candidacy of courageous moderate John Anderson and help him MAKE HISTORY!!!!!!

Ah, so you consider being pro-abortion to be the "sane" position, Donny. Good to know.

Also LOL at the notion that you and Goldwater would agree on anything besides war.

Goldwater would be considered an "eeevil liberal RINO" for holding positions the exact opposite of you and your pro-big government worldview.

I was mainly referring to his views about all Americans being able to serve their country in its armed forces.  If Goldwater was pro-choice then course I would disagree with that.  The problem is that your buddies in the RINO-hunting movement would force him out of the Party, while I'd still vote for him.

probably. I sure wouldn't be excited about LBJ, but the way Goldwater talked about using nuclear weapons would have scared me enough to override the scope of government issues.
