Furthermore, in 1981, why would you vote for Chirac in the votes round yet against him in the second?

...because he wasn't on the ballot in the second round.

Yeah, sorry, clash's post there confused me.

1965: Mitterrand (Union of Left) - Mitterrand(Union of Left)
1969: Duclos (Communist) - abstain
1974: Mitterrand (Union of Left) - Mitterrand (Union of Left)
1981: Mitterrand (socialist) - Mitterrand (socialist)
1988: Mitterrand (socialist) - Mitterrand (socialist)
1995: Jospin (socialist) - Jospin (socialist)
2002: Chevènement (republican left) - Chirac (right)
2007: I was 8, I supported Bayrou (centrist) and Buffet (communist) for the first round, and Royal (socialist) for the second. If I had been mature, it would have been Fabius (socialist) for the socialist primaries, and then Royal (socialist) - Royal (socialist)
2012: Hollande (socialist) - Hollande (socialist). For the socialist primaries, back in 2012 I was for Valls, but now I'd be for Montebourg
2017: my first vote, Mélenchon (unsubdued France) - Macron (liberal centrist) . I supported Montebourg in the socialist primaries

LR all the way through up until 2017.

Back when the election happened, I was pro-Marine Le Pen. I thought she was different in that she represented a marked shift in her father's racist, xenophobic policies and pursued those that did not follow the same path.  In addition, she is anti-EU, which I also am.

Now, while I still hold the above beliefs, I recognize that Le Pen's economic policies would have been horrible. She probably also would not have been a very good President.  So for these reasons, Macron in both rounds.

I was a big Fillon fan myself but I agree with your criticism of Le Pen, I think even regardless of her policy she just not have what it takes to be president, which I don't think is the case with her niece (even a lot of the liberal people I know reluctantly admit in terms of personal traits Marion has what it takes to be president, but we all agree that Marine does not).
