Opportunity, pure and simple. There was Democratic State Rep. from Athens who changed to the GOP, which was totally necessary since Athens is very Democratic.  Switching to the majority party equals more perks, lots of Democrats switched to Republican after the 1994 election and it didn't mean Clinton was destroying the party.
