It can't remain in the Democratic column forever.

In 2008 it would have been D as long as you didn't restrict voting to upper class white males.

Once the state loses at least 10 million people or so, another 100 years I don't know.

Its starting to resemble voting patterns more similiar to Massachusetts and becoming even more left wing then it had been even 10 years ago. These midterms are proof of that. Also Obama almost capturing Orange County and taking the Inland Empire does not spell good news for GOP prospects in the state. It has not voted republican at the presidential level since 1988 (even that was close 51-47%) It has not had a conservative governor since Pete Wilson left in the late 90s. Arnold Swartzenegger is a "rino" and to the left on almost all social issues from abortion to support of gay marriage. If republicans are to win here they will have to nominate candidates in the mold of Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine. With the exception of the Attorney Generals race all statewide democratic candidates won by a 10 pt or higher margin in a midterm election where turnout was not as high as it was in 2008. If I were a republican I would kiss California goodbye for this generation anyway.

I can't see a Republican winning California, barring a massive landslide. However, I don't rule out the possibility of a non-Democrat winning it at some point.

I'm wondering whatever happened to that insurgent Western Conservatism that sprang up between the '60's and the '80's, and how that dies out in places like California.

Take a look at the changes in California's demographics in the past 50 years. They're the same changes the whole country is likely to experience in the next 50.

Demographics aren't all of it though. It is heavily Democratic areas like the Bay Area where white progressives put the Democrats over the top. West LA is something like 70% White, and yet they have given the state and congress such illustrious people as Waxman, Brownley, the Lowenthals, and Harman. I think it has to do with the National GOP basically giving up on the state and allowing the Democrats to consolidate strength.

Of that I have no doubt. Then it can truly be said
California, the state where votes don't count.
You can add that to your labels as well.

I'm not going to turn this into a gay marriage discussion, but remember that most Americans approved of segregation and were opposed to interracial marriages as well. Marriage is a right, not a privilege for heterosexuals.
IMO, California will become a swing state when the Republican Party rejects the teabaggers and Religious Right zealots in its party, so never. When the Republican Party tells Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck that they do not represent the entire face of the Republican Party and when they embrace (and not purge) moderates from their party, then I could foresee a moderate Republican coming close to carrying California, but even then it would be a stretch. Too many minorities in California who vote Democratic, combined with the affluent white progressives, makes it a tough state for the Republicans now or ever.

Of course you can. That's what political debate is, and anyways, the people are nearly always wrong.

Please, don't insult our intelligence by comparing gay marriage to race equality. They are simply not related.

Both are civil rights issues.
