After the primaries are all over neither of the candidates have enough delegates. Senate Majority Leader Barry Goldwater Jr. and House Minority Leader Newt Gingrich decide to meet with Specter and Buchanan as well as RNC chairman Haley Barbour.
The first meeting doesn't go too well and Buchanan says he won't drop out of race. "I feel that I have the right to the nomination just as Senator Specter does. I will stay in this race until the convention."
They decide to meet again in a week. That meeting goes a little smoother. However, neither candidate is willing to give anything so one or the other can get the nomination.
As July gets here, the Republicans are urging Buchanan to drop out so Specter can be the ultimate nominee. Wait and see what happens.

Buchanan decides to drop out when Senator Arlen Specter decides he will pick Senator Robert Smith of NH as his running mate. Buchanan states "Americans I've decided to drop out of the race today as Senator Specter decides he will pick a conservative leader for Vice President, Senator Smith of New Hampshire. Thanks for your support in the primary."
Senator Specter and Senator Smith make a speech together. Specter says "Americans, after a long drawn out primary and long negotiations I've decided Senator Smith is the best person to help this ticket to victory in November." Senator Smith says "This is a great honor to be the Vice Presidential candidate for a major party. On election day remember Senator Specter and I will have a better America than we have now. Thanks and God Bless America."

President Cuomo says "We definately can't afford the Republicans the next 4 years now. They're not right for America. First we are running against a person who had the endorsement of a former President that wanted to get rid of the Education Department."

Specter/Smith 42%
Perot/Stockdale 12%
Undecided 2%
Right now it's a close race. As of right now, the Republicans could pick up a few House and Senate races this fall. Up next the conventions then the debates and finally the election.

Republican National Convention: August 12th-August 15th
On the first night of the convention Senator (and former President) Barry Goldwater Jr. gives a speech. "Over the last 4 years we've seen bigger spending than we've seen since Ted Kennedy was President. We need Senators Specter and Smith. That's the best direction for America."
On the third night Senator Robert Smith accepts the GOP's VP nomination. "We have a great opportunity this November to elect Republicans over Democrats. We can't afford all this liberal spending in Washington. Under a Specter/Smith administration we will have a better direction for America. Remember in November to support the Republican ticket if you want lower taxes and more freedom."
On the final night Senator Arlen Specter accepts the GOP's Presidential nomination. "Republicans I want to thank you for nominating me this year. It's a great privilege to be in this position. In a statement I'd like to make is I will not be as conservative as some may have wanted me to be. I feel being in the middle is the best way to go. Thanks."

Democratic National Convention: August 26th-August 29th
On the first night Senator (and former President) Ted Kennedy says "Democrats this is the most important election of your life. In the fall we have a race between a man who has connection to former President Goldwater."
On the third night Vice President Kerrey accepts his nomination. "Tonight I want to talk about the accomplishments over the last 4 years. LGBT rights, better security measures and more. Over the next 4 years we hope to bring foreward more ideas including keeping taxes low on the middle class."
On the final night President Cuomo accepts his nomination. "Fellow Democrats we need to win this election. We have a choice between a man who has the endorsement of a former President, who wants to get rid of the Education system compared to a man who wants to look out for the middle class. If you elect Specter you'll get another Goldwater-esque type candidate."

Presidential Debate: October 14th, 1996
Scheiffer:
Welcome everyone to the Presidential Debate of 1996. We have with us tonight President Mario Cuomo, Senator Arlen Specter and Mr. Ross Perot. First question, what will your plan be for the next 4 years? President Cuomo go first.
Cuomo:
First I want to thank my 2 opponents for appearing with me tonight. Now in answer to your question, I will work hard on keeping America safe as well as look out for the middle class.
Specter:
I, too, want to thank my 2 opponents for being here tonight. If elected I will stop some of this spending in Washington. However I do agree that the healthcare law will stay in place and that LGBT rights will be upheld.
Perot:
Being an Independent candidate for President I truly am grateful for being invited here tonight. On my first day in office I will make sure that we have a fair and balanced budget. Another thing I will do is try to bring both parties todgether.
The debate will continue soon.

Scheiffer:
Alright, 2nd question, what is your opinion on abortion?
Specter:
I believe that it's a woman's right to choose.
Perot:
I think that woman need a right to choose.
Cuomo:
Well, it looks like this is one issue where we all agree. I don't think abortion rights should be overturned.
Scheiffer:
3rd and final question, would you reform the Electoral College system even more than it's been reformed?
Wait and see what happens. Will be right back.

Perot:
I believe we need to get rid of the Electoral system totally and just do a popularity contest.
Cuomo:
I think we can reform it more. I believe that we are headed in the right direction.
Specter:
I voted in favor of reforming the Electoral College. I think, however, there needs to be a compromise with EV's and popularity votes.
Scheiffer:
Thanks for tuning in tonight. Remember that the Vice Presidential Debate is October 23rd. Then Election Day is around the corner on November 5th.

Vice Presidential Debate: October 23rd, 1996
Scheiffer:
Hello everyone and welcome to the Vice Presidential Debate of 1996. We have with us tonight Vice President Bob Kerrey, Senator Robert Smith and Admiral James Stockdale. First question, tonight, is what would you do if you succeeded the Presidency? Vice President Kerrey?
Kerrey:
If I assumed the office of President of the United States I would speak to the American people and continue the policies of the current administration.
Smith:
If I had to assume the Presidency I would help America through the hard times.
Stockdale:
If I had to assume the Presidency I'd address the public.
Wait and see what happens.

Scheiffer:
2nd question, what is a priority, in your mind, that should be done over the next 4 years?
Smith:
If the Specter/Smith team is elected in November there will be a whole different ball game. We will have more conservatism compared to the administration now. We can't afford all this spending.
Stockdale:
If Mr. Perot and I are elected we will try to bring the country together and compromise compared to most Presidents. We also will plan a fair and balanced budget. Also, what have these two parties really done for you in the long run? If you think about it most of the ideas that the two major parties picked up were ideas thought up by third parties.
Kerrey:
I want to say that if President Cuomo and I are re-elected we will continue to look out for the middle class and keep America safe. As far as what Mr. Stockdale said I think there's alot that both parties have done, whether good or bad, in the long run.
Smith:
I agree with the Vice President when it comes to saying Mr. Stockdale is wrong.
Wait and see what happens next.

Scheiffer:
Alright, last question. What do you think needs to be done with the
Civil Rights Act of 1993
?
Stockdale:
I believe that it was the right thing to do. Sexual orientation shouldn't matter much.
Kerrey:
I, too, believe that we did the right thing when it comes to gay and lesbian rights.
Smith:
I think it should be overturned. This is one issue where Senator Specter and I disagree.
Scheiffer:
Thanks for tuning in tonight. You've heard all 3 candidates and their running mates talk. Remember to vote on November 5th. Goodnight and God Bless America.

Not sure who I support. Despite the choice of Smith, I'd probably choose Perot over Specter.

1996 Congressional Results:
House:
225 Democrats, 210 Republicans
Senate:
52 Democrats, 48 Republicans
The Republicans made some gains in the House and Senate.
Senate Minority Leader Barry Goldwater Jr. states "This is a great night for Republicans, even though we're still in the minority. We gained 40 seats in the House and 5 seats in the Senate. Hopefully in 2 years we can win both Houses back." (Senator Goldwater is a potential GOP candidate in 2000).
Wait and see what the results are from the House and Senate as far as President and Vice President are.

You know, if I get the time, I can copy a map onto paint and put in the numbers for each candidate myself. It's a tedious process and it might look confusing, but if I have time I'll try.
