On the Republican side running for Senate in California, there was a number of names running for the nomination, which include names that are big, could have been big, or that people are at least aware of. They include:
Pete Wilson (duh)
Barry Goldwater Jr.
Pete McKloskey (don't know if I spelled that right)
Robert Dornan
Maureen Reagan (I think)

My question is, why was there such a desire to be the Republican nominee? Was it because of the likelihood that a Republican would win that year? Also, why did certain names, such as Barry Goldwater Jr. and Maureen Reagan not enter electoral politics again after this?

Senate seats in California don't open up very often, and there are a lot of people who want them.

It was an open Republican seat. Why wouldn't there be a desire to run for it on the GOP side?
