1912 is one of the most interesting elections in american history.  does anyone know of any books that deal with that election?

I have a question, do you think that if TR had won the election of 1912 that the Progressives would continue as a plossible party, and in the future lead America to a three party system? Or would/could they phase out the Democrats?

If I understand what you're saying you believe that there would of been 20 years of Progressive rule. I'm doubtful of that but it is possible. He would of seriously taken control of the West and midwest. In a book titled, What if?, it sepeculates that TR would of negotiated a peace between the Entente and Axis ending WWI. That would of been nice. I really like TR.

He was GREAT. he'd rather made peace or enter the war in 1915, end it in 1916 and do not let rusia fall for the bolshevicks

but I know 20 years of progressive rule was a wushful thinking

It's not the Axis, it's the central powers or the allies. Teh Axis were world war II.

Yes, I'm sorry Gustaf, I'm a WWII buff, not WWI, so I know less. I could of sworn they were sometimes called the Axis, but I guess I was wrong.

It's OK, I used to be both, but I forgot a lot of my historical knowledge, much to my disppoinement...I found out today that I no longer remembered the name of the river where Italy and Austria fought most of their battles in WWI and Swedish historical data, like the Nöteborg peace being signed in 1323 or the Scandinavian Seven Years War breaking out in 1563 are no longer without a moment's hestitation... Sad

I think that they are sometimes called the Axis, but that it's always incorrect, if you know what I mean... Wink

The ONLY reason the Progressive Party was formed in 1912 was so Teddy Roosevelt could run, since the Republicans nominated the incumbent (Taft).  This split the Republican vote and ensured a Democratic victory.  I think that if by some miracle Roosevelt had actually won that election, he probably would not have run again in 1916, having served nearly three complete terms as President.  If he did decide to run for a fourth term (third elected term), he would have run as a Republican.

He supported the Republican nominee in 1916, according to a book I have on Presidential history.  The Progressive Party did not run a candidate.

Correct. TR's own reason was probably mostly ego, you're right there, but the Progressives were a group with disticnt views. TR supported Hughes in 1916 b/c he hated Wilson and had become much more partisan.
