I think he will survive until '08. There will actually be a flurry of support for him to run for President. But, I emphasize a "flurry" of support.

He's going to be the first retiring VP since...Alben Barkeley not to have an interest in succeeding him.

And the first two-term VP since Thomas Marshall never to have declared an interest in seeking the Presidency.

Dies during term but goes on to serve two terms as president.

Obviously, serves out and retires is the most realistic option.

Depends if they convince Jeb to run or not.  If Jeb gives it the okay, Cheney stays.  If not, there is a chance they'll put Bush's "pick" in.  But, I think Cheney stays regardless.

Cheney stays and retires, just as he has said in the past.

Additionally, Jeb won't run in 2008, just as he has said in the past.

2008 is going to be a great election year since (unless Kerry tries to run again) both parties are going to run fresh candidates for the office.  This will be a great time then for the laws to be made fair for the third party candidates so they can have an equal shot at the empty seat.

There is a school of thought out there that Cheney will resign before the end of his term to allow Bush to appoint a replacement; who will then have a leg up in the 2008 nomination process.

He'll serve his term, then retire.  His age and ticker preclude a run.

Shame.  He'd be a great president.

If he ran, I'd take a leave of absence and come and work for him.

I think he'll resign toward the end of the second term and leave public life forever. It's a shame. He's a smart guy who has a deep knowledge of politics, and he'd make an interesting president.
