I assume FDR would like to keep Romney as running-mate in 1944, which would led him directly to the White House in April 1945, but there's one problem with such speculation: Wallace was dropped because Democratic leader feared he may become, in a light of FDR's health, next President. So wouldn't they (assuming we follow this speculation) want a Republican out of ticket in 1944?

Just my two cents.

Good updates, though, as you admitted, far to biased towards the Romney family.

I guess so. I guess I've been somewhat biased towards the Goldwaters in some of my timelines despite not agreeing with them on a number of issues.

Yes, that is absolutely true.  No doubt about it.

And so it is that this thread is completely shameless.  Cheesy

I'm guessing that since this has so many Romneys involved in politics, it will have Vern Romney of Utah (failed gubernatorial candidate in 1976 I think) and Scott Romney of Michigan (failed AG candidate in 1998).

Just a note on the 1940 Presidential campaign.

Vice Presidential nominee Gaskell Romney made a point not to demean or attack the Republican ticket or party during the campaign.  Instead, he campaigned on the benefits and virtues of a national unity administration in this time of international conflict.  He wanted to maintain his standing in the Republican Party, and that of the Romney family within the Republican Party as much as possible.

December 5, 1941

President Franklin D. Roosevelt falls ill and is rushed to Walter Reed Medical Center.  First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt is at his side.  Immediately upon hearing about the situation from a senior Roosevelt aide, Vice President Gaskell Romney and his wife Amy are speedily driven to the hospital.  They greet the First lady with a hug.  Other members of the Roosevelt family are in the room.  The Romneys greet each of them warmly.

GR and Amy to Eleanor Roosevelt:  We are so sorry, so very sorry.

ER through her tears:  Thank you.  Thank you.

GR to FDR, gripping his hand tightly:  Franklin, you are going to be fine, I know it.  I just know it.

FDR, struggling to speak:  Gas    kell,    these    are    troub    ling    times.    You    can    do    the    job.    I    know    you    can.    That's    why    I    picked    you    for    VP.

GR:  Franklin, just relax, everything will be alright.

With that, President Franklin D. Roosevelt lapses into unconsciousness, breathing but unconscious.

At this point, there is nothing more the Romneys can do at the hospital.  They warmly bid goodbye to the First Lady and the other members of the Roosevelt family, and are escorted from the room by Presidential security.  They are taken back to their residence, where increased security is put in place.

Vice President Gaskell Romney becomes Acting President of the United States, as the President is incapacitated, but is still alive.  The Chief Justice of the United States, Harlan Fiske Stone, is immediately sent for, and administers the oath of office to Romney.  Gaskell Romney assumes full Presidential powers.

Gaskell and Amy Romney hug each other, with Amy whispering quietly to her husband

It's all up to you now, it's all up to you.

Acting President Gaskell Romney fully realizes the enormity of the challenges that now face him and the nation in the turbulent and troubled times ahead.

December 6, 1941

Acting President Gaskell Romney begins the day by talking by phone with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.  Romney then meets with the cabinet, top military leaders, and then with Congressional leaders.  Top of the agenda, the world situation.

December 7, 1941

The Acting President is advised of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  After meeting with military advisers, Romney writes a speech he will deliver to a joint session of Congress on December 8.

December 8, 1941, 12:30 pm, Acting President Gaskell Romney begins his address to a joint session of Congress.

(With acknowledgment to FDR speech)

Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And, while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island.
And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has therefore undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense, that always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

The Senate and House of Representatives approve the war declaration almost unanimously - the pacifist Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin of Montana votes against the resolution.  At 4pm, Romney signs the declaration of war on Japan.

Three days later, December 11, Japan's allies, Germany and Italy, both declare war on the United States. The U.S. Congress responds immediately by declaring war on them.

The United States of America is now at war, and Acting President Gaskell Romney dedicates himself to leading the nation to victory.

Acting President Gaskell Romney rallies the nation behind the war effort.

In a series of radio adresses, Romney inspires the nation to move forward with renewed determination to preserve freedom and democracy, and the American way of life.

(With acknowledgment to FDR addresses)

There are many among us who in the past closed their eyes to events abroad--because they believed in utter good faith what some of their fellow Americans told them -- that what was taking place in Europe was none of our business; that no matter what happened over there, the United States could always pursue its peaceful and unique course in the world.

Obviously, a defense policy based on that is merely to invite future attack.

In some quarters, with this rude awakening has come fear, fear bordering on panic....It is whispered by some that, only by abandoning our freedom, our ideals, our way of life, can we build our defenses adequately, can we match the strength of the aggressors.

Today we are more realistic. But let us not be calamity-howlers and discount our strength.

Today's threat to our national security is not a matter of military weapons alone. We know of other methods, new methods of attack.

The Trojan Horse. The Fifth Column that betrays a nation unprepared for treachery. Spies, saboteurs and traitors are the actors in this new strategy. With all of these we must and will deal vigorously.

But there is an added technique for weakening a nation at its very roots, for disrupting the entire pattern of life of a people. And it is important that we understand it.

The method is simple. It is, first, discord, a dissemination of discord. A group--not too large--a group that may be sectional or racial or political -- is encouraged to exploit its prejudices through false slogans and emotional appeals. The aim of those who deliberately egg on these groups is to create confusion of counsel, public indecision, political paralysis and eventually, a state of panic.

For more than three centuries we Americans have been building on this continent a free society, a society in which the promise of the human spirit may find fulfillment. Commingled here are the blood and genius of all the peoples of the world who have sought this promise.

We have built well. We are continuing our efforts to bring the blessings of a free society, of a free and productive economic system, to every family in the land. This is the promise of America.

It is this that we must continue to build--this that we must continue to defend.

It is the task of our generation, yours and mine. But we build and defend not for our generation alone. We defend the foundations laid down by our fathers. We build a life for generations yet unborn. We defend and we build a way of life, not for America alone, but for all mankind. Ours is a high duty, a noble task.

Acting President Gaskell Romney spends almost his entire time directing the war.

June 5, 1942, President Roosevelt's bedside at the Walter Reed Medical Center, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt sitting next to her husband, hears stirrings.

Eleanor, in a voice of complete surprise:  Franklin?  Franklin?  Can you hear me?
FDR, in a weak yet audible voice:  Eleanor, Eleanor, I hear you.  I hear you.
Eleanor: Oh Franklin, Franklin, (breaking into tears) you've come back, you've come back.

Eleanor rings frantically for the doctor.  A doctor and three nurses come rushing into the room.

Doctor:  Mrs. Roosevelt, what's the matter?
Eleanor:  Doctor, Franklin has come back.
Doctor:  What?  Are you sure?
Eleanor:  Yes, he was just speaking with me.

The doctor goes to FDR's side, grasping his hand.

Doctor:  Mr. President, can you feel my hand, and can you hear me?
FDR, still not opening his eyes:  Yes, I can, I can.
Doctor:  Mr. President, can you open your eyes slowly, slowly?

FDR slowly begins opening his eyes.

Doctor:  That's right, slowly.  What do you see?
FDR:  The lights.  Doctor, is that you?
Doctor:  Yes, Mr. President, it's me.

The doctor motions for the First lady to come over close to the bed and to sit beside her husband.  She takes his hand in hers.

Eleanor:  Franklin, can you see me?
FDR:  Yes.  Eleanor, Eleanor, how I love you so.

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt see each other for the first time in six months.

Acting President Romney has been sent for.  A few minutes later, Gaskell and Amy Romney quietly enter the room.  Eleanor motions them over to the bedside.

GR:  Franklin, can you see me?  Can you hear me?
FDR:  Yes Gaskell.  Who else has a voice like that?

Everyone in the room chuckles.

GR:  Franklin, I knew everything was going to be fine.  I always knew it.  This is truly a miracle, a gift from God, and I believe in miracles, and in God's goodness.

All in the room shed a tear or two.

(Too much melodrama?) Smiley

Two weeks after his miraculous recovery, President Franklin D Roosevelt is back behind his desk at the Oval Office and back in charge.  Acting President Gaskell Romney reassumes the office and responsilities of Vice President.

President Roosevelt addresses the nation over national radio

My fellow Americans, as you are aware, six and a half months ago, I became ill and fell into unconsciousness.  I am pleased and thankful to report to the people of the United States of America that I have been given a clean bill of health by the doctors.  To say that there have been some extremely important and historical developments since my illness have occurred would be an under statement.  America has been provoked and attacked and we are a nation at war.

I would like to thank Vice President Gaskell Romney, who has held the office of Acting President for the past six months, for the courageous and exemplary leadership he has provided America during the opening six months of this conflict.  He has lifted and inspired the nation with his words and deeds.  Thank you Vice President Romney.  I am pleased to have the Vice President as an integral part of my administration in these perilous times.

My fellow Americans, right will endure, and we will win the ultimate victory over the forces that would subvert democracy and enslave the world to their evil ideologies of nazism and facism.

President Roosevelt and Vice President Romney meet in the Oval Office after FDR's radio address to the nation.

GR:  Franklin, you have inspired the nation today with your courage and determination in the face of illness and world war.

FDR:  Thank you Gaskell.  I would like to personally thank you for picking up the reins of the Presidency and so ably leading the nation in this time of crisis.

GR:  Thank you Franklin.  I want you to know that Amy and I prayed fervently every day for your recovery.  We give thanks for your return.

FDR:  Thank you Gaskell.  That means so much to Eleanor and I.

The Allied nations make advances in the war from June 1942 to January 1944.

In January of 1944, President Roosevelt meets with Vice President Romney in the Oval Office.

FDR:  Gaskell, I am a dying man.  I have decided that I will not run in the 1944 election.  The war is going well and I believe the allies will be victorious by mid 1945.    To make a long story short, Gaskell, I want you to succeed me as President.  I have seen how you have handled affairs as Governor of Utah, as Secretary of the Treasury, as Vice president, and I know how well you handled the Presidency for six months during my illness.  You are the man for the job Gaskell.  I have no doubt about that.  You will have my complete support.  Just one thing, you will not be running as a Republican of course.

GR:  Franklin, as you know, I have made no secret of my ambition of running for President.  I would never run of course as long as you are a candidate and having you support me for President is a deep honor, beyond words.  Franklin, of course I could not expect you to back me as a Republican candidate for President.  So what I plan to do is to change my registration from Republican to independent.  I shall seek the Democratic Presidential nomination as a National Unity candidate, much the same as you and I did in 1940.  After all, America is still at war.  Only instead of a Democrat with a Republican running mate, I shall run as an independent with a Democratic running mate.  I will run on a platform of keeping on track to win the war and of a national program of war recovery following victory in the war.  With your support, I believe I can win the nomination, and go on to win the election.

FDR:  Gaskell, that is exactly the approach I was going to advise.  In reality, you have been more of a Democrt than a lot of Democrats.  You have backed the New Deal, in fact, as Secretary of the Treasury, you have implemented much of the New Deal and have played a very major role in pulling the nation out of depression and putting it back on the road to economic recovery.  You have inspired the nation during my illness when we were attacked and have led us through the first six months of war.  That is what I will be telling Democrats as they seek to replace me on the ticket.

GR:  Thank you Franklin.  I shall be launching my Presidential campaign in a week.

President Franklin Roosevelt lets it be known that he will not run in 1944 and that he is backing his Vice President, Gaskell Romney, "wholeheartedly", to become the Democratic nominee for President.

FDR makes a national radio broadcast:

I am backing Vice President Gaskell Romney for President because he is the right man for the job at this time in the nation's history.  As Governor of Utah, he greatly improved the conditions of that state during the depression.  As Secretary of the Treasury, he was at the forefront of America's emergence from the depression.  As Acting President, he rallied the nation when we were attacked.   As an independent, Vice President Romney will run on a National Unity ticket.  America is still at war, and the Vice President believes, as do I, that it would be in the best interests of the nation to have a President with the broadest spectrum of support as possible.  This can ony be achieved by having a President with broad support that crosses party lines.

The 1944 Democratic National Convention is held at Chicago Stadium in Chicago on July 19 to 22.  President Roosevelt makes a dramatic appeal to convention delegates on behalf his Vice President.  Due to Roosevelt's tremendous support and respect in the party, and to Romney's reputation as a leader who has delivered results, no serious opposition to the Romney candidacy emerges.

The word is discreetly put out to the convention delegates that Roosevelt and Romney would like to have Maryland Senator Millard Tydings on the ticket as Vice President.  There is a faction that wants to push forward the nomination of Missouri Senator Harry Truman for the second spot on the ticket.  Tydings emerges as the winner, again due mainly to the influence of Roosevelt, who still has tremendous clout within the party and the nation.

Romney believes that Tydings is a good pick for his experience, his positive record, his respect within the Democratic Party, and due to the fact that he is from the moderate wing of the party, giving the ticket a wider appeal in the election.

Another compromise is worked out at the convention that the ticket of Gaskell Romney and Millard Tydings will be called the National Unity Democratic ticket.

The Republicans nominate the recently elected Governor of New York, Thomas Dewey for President and Ohio Governor John Bricker for Vice President.

Romney keeps the campaign respectful and emphasizes his experience and record.

The voters decide that Romney has the experience and record of accomplishment the nation needs at the time, and that perhaps Dewey needs more time in office to better prepare him for the Presidency.

Romney and Tydings defeat Dewey and Bricker by a comfortable though not overwhelming margin.

Romney/Tydings              311
Dewey/Bricker                 220

At age 73, Gaskell Romney becomes the oldest President ever elected.

Gaskell Romney and Millard Tydings are inaugurated as President and Vice President on January 20, 1945.

The new President does not have much time in office before he is to attend the upcoming Big Three conferences.

Feb 4 - 11, 1945, President Romney meets at the Yalta Conference with Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain and General Secretary Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, to discuss Europe's post war re-organization.

Churchill meets Romney for the first time.

WC:  Mr. President, it is so very nice to finally meet you.  I recall when you were Secretary of the Treasury, in the mid 1930's, when you were speaking out about Hitler and the German rush to war, and the evils of the Nazi regime.  You were like me in Britain, almost a lone voice warning of the coming catastrophe.  I recall the press dubbed you the American Churchill.

GR:  Thank you Prime Minister.  And call me Gaskell.

WC:  Agreed.  And you call me Winston.

GR:  You know, Winston, I don't trust Stalin and the Soviet Union at all.  I can see the game they are up to.  As they advance from the east, they are occupying the nations of eastern Europe, and they have no intention of leaving.  They will be establishing what I refer to as the Evil Empire, enslaving the nations of Eastern Eruope under their Communist regime.  I can see what I call an Iron Curtain descending across the European continent, dividing Western Europe from Eastern Europe.

WC:  Gaskell, I share the exact same sentiments.  When this war is over, the world will be facing a new menace, not a Nazi menace, but a Communist menace.  Hmm, Iron Curtain.  I like that term.  Would you mind if I use that term in a speech sometime?

GR:  I don't mind at all Winston, I don't mind at all.  As a matter of fact, I would be honored to have you use that phrase in a speech of yours.

July 16 - August 2, 1945, President Romney meets at the Potsdam Conference with Prime Minister Winston Churchill and General Secretary Joseph Stalin.  Part way through the conference, July 26, Churchill is replaced by the new British Prime Minister, Clemet Atlee.  They are discussing how to punish a defeated Germany.

President Romney tells Prime Minister Churchill he sees a new war coming, a war he refers to as the Cold War.
