Both are as diverse as anywhere else. I'll go with NC because it's cheaper, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere other than Research Triangle or Charlotte.

Both would be acceptable for me. Massachusetts has Boston, and the benefits that a major city brings. North Carolina has sunshine.

I voted NC, but they're basically equal for me.
