Good, it seems like as thie election gets closer, the GOP aren't going to walk into the WH like they thought after the midterms. Obama may be still under 50% but he can still win with being that way in the polls.

Why would they poll Bachman but not one of the many other serious candidates?

They always poll Gingrich/Huckabee/Palin/Romney, plus a "wildcard" pick.  The wildcard pick is usually decided by a web poll that PPP puts on its website.  This month people opted for Bachmann in the web poll.

Ah.  The Republican Field is extremely weak, highlighted by Question 7.

favorable / unfavorables among all voters:

Huckabee 37 / 38%
Palin 35 / 58%
Gingrich 31 / 52%
Romney 36 / 40%
Bachmann 22 / 31%

among Republicans only:

Huckabee 60 / 17%
Palin 59 / 32%
Gingrich 55 / 26%
Romney 50 / 30%
Bachmann 30 / 16%

Also, Palin trails Obama among women by 30 points, but among men by only 5 points, which is a larger gender gap than for any of the other candidates.  And, despite being behind among all voters, Gingrich, Huckabee, Palin and Romney all lead Obama among voters over 65 years old.  Bachmann, on the other hand, trails Obama among all age groups.

I still say Huckabee is horribly, horribly overrated as a candidate. Right now people know him as the avuncular seemingly generic conservative on Fox. There's no way he could hide his strong membership of "the rapture religious right" once he ran, and his advocacy of replacing a graduated income tax with a national sales tax would turn many many many voters off if he didn't jettison it.

My 2 cents anyway.....

Indeed. Being avuncular won't be enough.

Anyone who offers to replace the income tax with a national sales tax will need to answer the question "What's in it for me?" There would have to be huge increases in jobs and higher pay in compensation.

Well he's also a religious.  A populist like him seems like the only chance for the GOP in this Depression era as people keep sinking further and further.

Sorry, no thanks. I don't need someone telling me that "I have a religious duty" to engage in pure economic suicide (Cap and Trade).

Despite his support for Cap and Trade (a rather bipartisan view only a couple years ago), there is MUCH more that is hard line conservative about Huckabee than merely his abortion policy. First, on just about every other social issue imaginable he is a card carrying member of the "rapture right". Secondly, his views on "fair tax" garbage in 08 of replacing a progressive income tax with a national sales tax is anathema to most outside the Club for Greed "Growth" crowd.

Regarding his record as governor, there's more smoke than light in the accusations and defense of his taxing and spending record. Regardless, 2011's Mike Huckabee doesn't seem like a potential president who would make expanding S-CHIP funding a high priority like early Governor Huckabee did.
