So Carol Mosely Braun is currently the leading black candidate? Why such a dirth of alternatives in the community?

A number of other Black candidates dropped out so as to give Moseley-Braun a better shot at winning.

I don't like that proposal either.

The only question seems to be whether Rahm wins outright or is forced into a run-off first.

edit: Chico's not doing so badly with White voters

Headline on TPM is that a court boots Emmanuel from the ballot.

He'll appeal it further up.

So basically the only way Rahm loses is if he fails to make the ballot?

The big question is: Is he ACTUALLY not going to be on the ballot?

In 2009, NYC took off Bill De Blasio's name from the Public Advocate race ad he wound up winning so that had no effect on the campaign.

Do you guys think he'll actually be removed permanently?

Oh, wow. Last I heard, that local court decided Rahm was eligible. Didn't know that an appeals process was still going on. Anyone know how the State Supremes will decide?

I'm not entirely disconnected from the legal political types in Chicago, and my impression is that this is the first time people actually got hit by the reality that Rahm might not be on the ballot.  The case against Rahm was never trivial, but it seemed like he had generally beaten it back until now. It's fairly unique case law and given the dissenting opinion in the Appeal Court's ruling, it really could go either way.

I hope so.  I have to say I chuckled when I first saw this headline.  I think President Obama could have picked a better CoS.

That's putting it lightly.

Suspense!

A friend's father clerks for a justice on the IL Supreme Court. I've gotten in touch with her; she's going to let me know as soon as she learns from her dad about what the court is thinking on this case. I'll post as soon as I find out Grin

I don't think he can claim residency because he rented out his house and did not physically live in Chicago.  He's not in the military so serving the president is a vague and undefined excuse.  Obviously the President is still in office, and if Rahm enjoyed serving the president, he should stay at the white house, he can't flip flop and choose the most convenient job disregarding the rules.

Ok, I like the demise of an overlyconfident frontrunner just as much as the next guy:

But are there any good options for mayor if Emanuel is off the ballot? I think Moseley Braun would do an awful job. Maybe Gery Chico would do a good job?

I'd be surprised if CMB (hey, same initials as Mr. Burns) won, even without Emanuel in the race. Emanuel-supporting whites would probably shift to Chico. Look at the breakdowns in the poll; despite only getting 16% of the vote, Chico's getting a quarter of the white vote, while CMB's support is almost entirely from black voters.

I guess he's not on the ballot. Hello Mayor Moseley-Braun?

Just let him on the ballot. Let the people of Chicago decide this with their votes.

Eligibility laws should not be ignored.  Otherwise, why bother enacting them?

I'd say Chico is the favorite if Rahm's off.
