My fellow Atlasians,

Because of my recent election to the assembly, I've decided that I will create a new thread and let this one go. My new thread will be for my office where you can post questions, advise me how to vote and such. We've reached the end of this thread and it was a fantastic journey. Thousands of views, hundreds of posts, double digit pages, we've had fun. Check out my new thread when it's created.

May God Bless,

Friends,

I am shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend, AndrewCT. I...I honestly have nothing further to say...Andrew provided help to me when I called upon him. He was a great man, he is sorely missed.

Regards,

Hello again Smiley

I've just announced my intent to run for Senate in the Special Election on Thursday. I am running under the Equity and Justice Party, so I will not hinder Shua's chances with fellow Populares. I do not expect to win this election and I will be giving my first preference to Shua. I'm running because...well, frankly, I miss campaigning and the suspense of election day. So, see you all around!

This kind of the problem with Atlasia... we need people who want to actually govern, rather than just campaign... Tongue

I'm very willing to Govern! But when it comes to this race, I realize I have no shot at winning. Actually, I'm kind of entering because I'm scared of Jasengle winning. But if I do (by some miracle) win, I'd take my duties seriously.

Hello again all,

I'm happy to announce that I will be running for a second term in the Northeast Assembly. Our assembly has accomplished some great things in our session, such as the passage of the GTO Rememberance Act, which declares that every anniversary of the GTO Bombing that we will fly our flags half mast out of respect (Governor Ghost_white signed the bill.) we also passed the Flat Tax Act, in which we attempted to make our current tax structure simpler, although the bill was vetoed. We are also currently in the midst of passing a bill that would cut legislative salaries in order to reduce deficit and add to a surplus. I'm proud to say I sponsered all three of the forementioned bills. I can not wait to begin my second term in the Assembly to accomplish even more than we did this time around. There is work to be done and I'm ready to lead.

Mr Matthews,

As you know, I just registered in Atlasia and you are one of my Northeast Assemblymen. I know an election is coming up next month and you're seeking a second term. Could you tell me a little bit more about your legislative record?

I've read through your flat tax proposal, and find it odd that you proposed:

The words "or health hazards" were removed by amendment. I understand your commitment to fairness in taxation, but isn't this sort of a handicap on responsible government measures in the future to alter tax rates? If government can invoke a legitimate claim to amelioration of wrong on behalf of the people through taxation's "power to destroy", why should it not be permitted to take action? What say you?

Also, while I see nothing wrong with lowering legislators' salaries to match the income of the common man, isn't the revenue that would be gained from such a measure rather insignificant? I do not doubt your motives, but the bill that you authored to this effect seems like a triviality.

I look forward to a bit of lively discussion!

Yours in anticipation,

hc

Good afternoon,

Concerning the Flat Tax proposal, the section you brought up was worded to sound a little funny, I know. That specific section was supossed to mean that the Government shall not create new taxes on say land or sales and so on. If we as an Assembly find that we are low on funds, some members would immediately jump to the conclusion that taxes must be raised. In such a situation I would propose that we cut spending that is unnessecary rather than take money away from the hard working Northeast Citizens. As for the Legislative Pay Cut bill, however small or large the sum is that is taken back from politicians, every little bit helps. The Northeast is not facing a deficit right now, so the money taken back could be reallocated into spending on education, local services and many other great attractions that our region has to offer.

Thank you for raising your questions, you are one of very few people to ever do so Tongue

If I may interject, the big problem I see with Section 6 of the Flat Tax Act is that the Assembly could just repeal it if they wanted to enact a tax prohibited by that section. In order to create a truly binding change, you would need to pass an amendment to that effect.

Well, in any case, Governor Ghost_white vetoed the bill. I plan to work on more local issues in the region for the rest of my term and in to my possible second term.

Okay, that's perfectly reasonable, but section 6 is a step too far nonetheless. It seems to me more responsible to cut spending through new legislation, as you suggest, rather than to necessitate spending cuts by eliminating the possibility of new taxes. But since the bill was vetoed, this is an issue of no great consequence.

A few more questions:

Do you support the single transferable vote system currently in place for elections in Atlasia, or do you believe that there is some better alternative?

Do you support granting licences or subsidies to the casino gambling industry?

And a more casual one: Why are you a member of the Populares, and what do you think that your party has to offer that others do not?

Again, thanks very much for your time and your thought.

1. I believe the current system has flaws but I can not come up with a better idea.

2. Licenses? Yes. Subsidies? Meh...no.

3. I am a member of the Populares because I believe that personal liberty and economic liberty can coincide in a positive manner. The Populares is the only party to stand for individual rights AND economic rights. I am a proud member of this party and always will be. We stand for a balance on both sides of the spectrum.

Thank you again for your questions.
