More closeups than you can shake a stick at in the gallery (you can simultaneously shake a stick at up to 19 closeups. I have 20.) - search for keyword "New York Precinct Map".

A note on the colour scheme:

Dark Red Obama >84.5 (because the app rounds and I wasn't going to whip out a calculator for every 85% precinct)
Red Obama 69.5-84.5
"Tomato" Obama 54.5-69.5
Silver neither candidate over 54.5
"Cornflower Blue" McCain 54.5-69.5
Blue McCain 69.5-84.5
Black McCain >84.5

White no votes or only a handful of votes, like less than a dozen or so, if it would have looked deceptive if colored.

And yeah, some thought went into the colour scheme. Smiley In say a constituency map, where it has an actual practical outcome who won, who won matters. In a precinct map, it basically does not - the fact that the two parties are finely balanced here is much more relevant. (Besides, there are limits to the number of shades available in the app.)

That's because I am an Utter Bastard.

Should be finished by the end of February, unless I'm busier then than I think I'm going to be. As you asked.

As usual, the racial map is very helpful.

Rockland County has some interesting polarization. I know what the dark blue is, of course, but what's up with the dark red to its east?

And what about what appears to be Far Rockaway in this shot? A quick search suggests it's an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, which makes sense given every other >84.5% R area is the same thing, I suppose... Tongue

Funniest thing about that couple-of-precincts area in Far Rockaway is that it's on both sides of the city line. Cheesy

1. Blacks. Spring Valley, NY and Hillcrest, NY contain almost all blacks living in Rockland County.*
2. You got it.

*FWIW, that heavily McCain area to the west is Orthodox Jews, but it's not Kiryas Joel. That's in Orange County. Kiryas Joel is the southern-more of the two medium McCain areas containing two marginal precincts within them (near the border with Rockland).

Williamsburg and Kew Gardens Hills also stick out as Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods.

Kind of puts the 2000-2004 swing into perspective, assuming Gore/Lieberman did better in these areas (I haven't actually checked, though I know some of the Rockland County precincts flipped from >90D to >90R).

And I was thinking the dark blue area was Ramapo, not Kiryas Joel, FWIW. Tongue

Yep, Orthodox neighborhood stretches from Far Rockaway across to Nassau county in Lawrence. Whole lot of walking going on Saturday morning.

Well, the black area is in Ramapo, too. "Ramapo" is hardly enlightening. The Orthodox areas are Monsey, Kaser and a couple of others.

New Square is also in Ramapo.

New Square is that single separate black precinct north of the dark red area. Which is "only" about 50% Black, fwiw.

Yeah, Kiryas Joel has funny factionalism, which means they vote near unanimous in some races but 60-40 in others. It so happens the minority faction in Kiryas Joel voted for Obama, and as a result it doesn't stick out in the map at all.

Great map!

For those who know Queens - what are the two pale blue patches south of the general Corona/Jackson Heights area? Are they both a wealthy Forest Hills vote, or do they extend into more white-Catholic areas like Maspeth?

The northern one is Maspeth/Middle Village. The southern one is Glendale. Both are white Catholic areas, although Glendale is a lot wealthier. Forest Hills is pretty solidly Dem, even the very wealthy parts. The wealthiest parts of Forest Hills (and of all of Queens) are the pink area northeast of Glendale.

There's also the patch up against Flushing Meadows in Forest Hills (not Kew Gardens Hills on the other side). Not sure what that is; maybe Orthodox Jews?

Not sure where the line between Forest Hills and Rego Park is, but it seems to straddle the border. But the rest of both neighborhoods is very Democratic, and on Google Maps the McCain spot does not seem to be particularly wealthy or lightly developed.

Any reason why Ulster County is so Democratic?

New Paltz is a college town and Woodstock is considered an "artists' colony", and, well, there aren't any Republican areas to even things out. The largest settlement, Kingston, is not nearly as Democratic.

I used Lewis's maps and the ethnic map linked from the first page to create two directly comparable maps for BK:

What are the uber-democratic white areas like?

also, what's that random uber-republican enclave which seems surrounded by blacks and Hispanics?

Looks like part of Williamsburg to me. Probably where all the Hasidic Jews are.
