Was thinking about major candidates not winning their home state and I was suprised at how long the list is.

Pinckney in 1804 and 1808
King in 1816
Van Buren in 1840
Polk in 1844  (won the election without home state)
Fremont in 1856
Douglas in 1860
Greeley in 1872
Hancock in 1880
Cleveland in 1888
Harrison in 1892
Bryan in 1900
Parker in 1904
Wilson in 1916  (won the election without home state)
Cox in 1920
Davis in 1924
Smith in 1928
Hoover in 1932
Landon in 1936
Wilkie in 1940
Dewey in 1944
Stevenson in 1952 and 1956
McGovern in 1972
Gore in 2000

Did I miss anyone or get one wrong?

What got me thinking about this was the idea of Mittens being the GOP candidate in 2012 and the likelihood that he will not win Massachusetts.

Do you mean state of birth, state of representation, or both?

Where he was considered "from" for the purposes of the election.  So when the candidate was nominated, what did the convention declare his home state to be?   For example, at the Republican Convention of 1856 Fremont was "of California", even though he was born in Georgia.

There would be at lot more candidates that lost their state of birth, for example Bush II lost Connecticut twice.

From the list, Dewey in 1944 is a given since both candidates were from NY, so one had to lose. Wink

Was 2004 one of the few times where both candidates lost their state of birth?

Technically, aren't all presidential candidates from the two parties "Major"?

PS. Roosevelt, 1912.
