I was looking at an interesting statistic. At the start of the 111th congress, over half of all of the democrats in the U.S. House from California (19) were women. Of the 19 Republicans, Mary Bono Mack was the only women. That's still over a third of the entire delegation

Why do you think there are so few republican women? Or on the flip side, why are women in CA more motivated to run than other states? Looking at Los Angeles County, almost all of the Eastern Part of the Count is represented by a woman (Sanchez, Napolitano, Richardson, Harman, Waters, Roybal, Bass, Chu).

Nor is it a new pattern, either. It's been around since the 90s at least.

Boxer and Feinstein being the Senators for a while now as well.

Maine/California seem to be pretty open to female politicians.

California is a very feminized state - a welfare mother's paradise.  Contrast with say, Texas.

I would agree with the first part, but the second part is just plain offensive. I think that with an organization like NOW playing a big role in California politics, there are more women interested in running for political offices.

California still hasn't had a female Governor. Probably won't for a while either unless people still think Loretta Sanchez will run, win the primary, and win the general.

People in California just happen to be more open-minded than they are in hick states.  The real question is why do hick states have so few women representatives?

Yeah because a non-hick open minded state like Massachusetts has had so many women representing it over the years.........

Meh, good point.
I was just explaining to Mister Hack over here that the prevalence of women politicians doesn't really have much to do with "open mindedness" and more to do with women being motivated to run for office.  There is obviously something, besides the progressiveness of California, the motivates women to run for Congress.
By blagohair's logic every state that doesn't have a black representative is racist.

Hey man, I am no conservative.  You would know that if you took five minutes to look through my post history.  Just saying that your logic is faulty here.  There have been plenty of states, some of them you would call "hick states" that have elected women to represent states in Congress.  There are some states that wouldn't normally be considered "hick states" that haven't elected many women to Congress.  I am not arguing this from an ideological perspective, merely a fact based non-asshole position.

In American politics, you can be either a clown or an asshole. There is no third option, Mechaclown.
