People understand how the London mayoral election works, right? How is the AV system really any more "confusing" than that?

It's less confusing!

As someone who is mostly indifferent but with a slight preference towards AV, ads such as this would motivate me to make certain I vote in the referendum and vote for AV.

Conservative former Australian Prime Minister John Howard was in a video on the BBC correcting inaccurate claims made by the no campaign, specifically that Australians are confused by our electoral system and that we desire change. I'll see if I can find a link...

Also, I wish the Yes camp would stop saying the Tories use Av for their leadership contests. They don't. They do multi-round voting...

Which is basically just time-inefficient IRV, no?

Well Tory MP's remember vote in rounds to eliminate leadership candidates, so the second stage is only voted on after the first round (i.e you don't preference at the beginning) and then the final two candidates are voted on by the membership.

You know who you're voting for in a second round. You don't with a second preference. I guess that's the best way I can explain it.

It's a bit like saying France uses AV because they have 2 round, when it's clearly not AV.

Yeah, multi-round voting is not the same as AV.

The difference is that the incentives for strange and/or dirty tactical calculations with multiple round voties are huge and very, very hard to resist to some players.
If people voted "rationally" in these kind of contests it would just be "time-inefficient AV". But they don't.

It wil be very turnout based; which means that Scotland and Wales and to a greater extent Northern Ireland will be key. The momentum seems to be with the 'NO' camp.

I'm going to spoil my ballot. I was tempted to do that anyway (I probably mentioned that a while back) but the crass stupidity of both official campaigns has helped to make up my mind. I'm not an eight year old and don't like being treated like one.

Yes. As long as you don't just lick the custard cream off and leave the biscuit. There are starving kids in Africa you know...
