Let's say that John McCain had withdrawn his campaign due to financial/staffing problems sometime in the summer of 2007, thus allowing Mitt Romney to take a  position as a frontrunner.

Then, Romney wins Iowa in a close race and kind of plays McCain's role until winning the nomination in March or April. Huckabee plays the role he played in RL, winning a few primaries down South and in the Midwest.

Would there be so much bad blood between Romney and Huckabee in that case? Would a Romney/Huckabee ticket be possible?

If Romney thought that having Huckabee as his running would help him, I think he would. Not sure about the opposite.
