does anyone know why he got killed so bad in 1976? I mean Lugar was a formidable candidate but Lugar had also lost to Birch Bayh. I know Indiana is a republican leaning state, but he did 5 points worse than Carter.

On my Election Night 76 coverage, the reporter said that Hartke was lucky in every election he won. His luck run out, plus Lugar was very popular in Indy and other places in the state.

they are right when they say that. He was first elected in 1958, which was a huge dem year, and re-elected in 1964 which was also a dem year. He should have lost in 1970, but pulled it out of his ass. In a neutral year (1976) he was f---ed.

Not to mention that he barely won the primary in 1976 over Phillip Hayes.

Did you ever see Vance Hartke on the tube?  He just exuded "hack" from every pore. He was a beta.
