Blatent plug alert:

The Eugene Debs Project

Not sure when I'll get round to finishing it...

Interesting...

Also interesting that Crawford Co. Kansas has gone back and forth between Democrats and Republicans so much since 1912.  That's quite a conservative area of the state; I suppose Pittsburg contributes quite a bit to the Dems.

I don't really know what you're trying to prove with those county statistics but Debs was an interesting guy. He ran five times without winning a single elector. That's not very significant, but considering one-timers like J. Strom Thurmond and George Wallace won a small share of electors (especially when considering what they stood for) far more recently than Debs, gives it an eerie feel. Perhaps Debs wouldn't have been jailed if he had supported Southern segregationists?

I don't know what I was trying to prove either. I got a connection error and was pissed that I could not do anything so I picked a random thing to get statistics on while waiting for the forum to work. Thought I might see a pattern, and up until 1944 their is quite a neat pattern. All voted for Lafollette too!!!! Mondale also has a disproportionate amount of support.

since then Beltrami county has been split, Lake of the Woods county was part of it when it voted for Debs.

Ironic that the last time Lake county voted for a Republican was a landslide year, for Hoover in 1932. It was also the only county in Minnesota to vote for Hoover. Of course it only voted for Hoover because Normal Thomas split the vote.

Another fun fact: St. Louis county, which contains Duluth, is next to Lake. Prior to 1932 it had never voted for a Democrat. It has voted for the Democrat in every single election after 1932.

So Northern MN was a mixed Republican-Socialist area with very little Dem support back then...cool.
