The 1972 and 1984 senate races would be nice to see.

I wonder when was the last time Cambridge and Boston went for different candidates.

Beautiful ! Smiley

It's quite surprising to see Goldwater won so many towns while getting literally destroyed statewide.

Comparing it with 1996, for example :

This despite a nearly 20-points rep swing. Shocked

To be fair, though, 1996 had something that 1964 didn't: Perot.

Perot doesn't really matter because I'm reasoning in terms of margins of vicotry. In 1964, Johnson was ahead of Goldwater by 53 points, and in 1996 Clinton was ahead of Dole by 33 points.

In terms of the aggregate margin of victory, you're right, but what I meant was that the presence of Perot in 1996 likely caused many towns to have a Clinton margin of victory rather than a Dole margin of victory. That manifests itself on the map as more red towns and fewer blue, which is what I thought you were getting at by comparing the overall color of the 1964 and 1996 maps.

It's quite surprising to see Goldwater won so many towns while getting literally destroyed statewide.

Lots of ethnic voting - kinda like Alabama, except it's WASPs and they vote Republican.  Still a lot of that today, although still not as much as there was in '64.  1992/1996 are special cases since liberal WASP Republicans voted heavily Perot, while Bush and Dole did relatively "well" among Catholics compared to Goldwater.
