Wed Feb 23, 2011

Reuters
* Demands for ruler and shura council to be elected * Campaign seeks minimum wage, more rights for women

* Not clear whether protests will materialise

DUBAI, Feb 23 (Reuters) – Hundreds of people have backed a Facebook campaign calling for a “day of rage” across Saudi Arabia next month to demand an elected ruler, greater freedom for women and release of political prisoners.

The page called for a “revolution of yearning” on March 11 in the kingdom, the world’s biggest oil exporter and which is ruled by an absolute monarchy.

More than 460 people had endorsed the page by Wednesday morning, but it was impossible to verify how many of them were inside Saudi Arabia or whether any protest would materialise.

What's FaceBook?

Day of Rage sounds like some horrible band of BRTD's.

Jerry Brown will pull a magic sword out of a stone and conquer North Africa under the banner of New California.

A social networking website taking the world by storm!

The "Day of Rage" was used for Egypt on January 25 and is a harbinger of success.

How high will the price of oil go? Some analyst today said only Libya & Algeria going down takes it to $220/barrel. With Saudi going down too it could go past $500/barrel.

Mass death on the streets of America with even the lower figure.  And people poo-pooed me when I asked dear Mubarak to mow them down.  Face it fellows - you support the Bearded Men Revolt, you support mass death of Americans.

500 a barrel? That's like what? $15 a gallon?

Well, in theory, but I think very little oil would actually be transported and sold locally as the social structure would break down into chaos.  It would be a Mad Max kind of world, and you and I would most likely be dead - and probably eaten.

For the record, I fully support the people of Thailand eating opebo.

We are politely discussing cannibalism in 2011. In 2001, that would get your ass kicked on the internet.

The Orientalism of certain people, especially those who have no clue, in the general discussion of the whole shazaam is phenomenal.

I hope this happens.  Then maybe we can get off our lazy asses and finally get some energy reform.

Too bad these protests didn't happen when the BP drill was gushing.  Then we'd have oil enthusiasts in a corner for the kill.

What? No it sounds like some stupid fifth-wave generic metalcore band or something. Not something I'd listen.

Libya and Algeria aren't going to double oil prices by themselves. They're each only about 3% of the world production. Now obviously Saudi Arabia's 15% will have more of an effect.

More than 460 people had endorsed the page

Holy Hot Pie! 460 people, that's like 60% of the country. Saudi Arabia is clearly going down. And they want elected leaders and women's rights? How awful.

Ah, yes. More people come and mock me and my posts when I post about the region. Please. Nothing is going on in Saudi Arabia, look that way. Meanwhile, somehow "460 people" have multiplied:

"Activists have set up Facebook pages calling for protests on March 11 and 20, with more than 17,000 supporters combined, but police managed to stifle two attempts to hold protests in the Red Sea city of Jeddah last month, highlighting the difficulties of such mobilization in the conservative kingdom"

PS the Saudis should take down Mark Zuckerberg's little creation ASAP.

I'm sure many of the people of Thailand have already "eaten" opebo.
