I see this bill as having the real possibility of discouraging companies from seeking government contracts and thus driving up costs dramatically.

Senators have 24 hours to object.

I see this bill as having the real possibility of discouraging companies from seeking government contracts and thus driving up costs dramatically.

So what is supposed to be done here? Nothing? Do we have no right to expect and demand that companies follow the damn law? I think all US companies should have both a verification process and strict enforcement (on them) to ensure that if you are employed in the US, you are legal. Our job is to provide a clear, efficient process to remove the excuses of "having to do the gov'ts job, or not having anyway to know for sure". Their job would be to use it.

If costs go up because we stop an illegal act, that in no way justifies letting the illegal act continue. Its a false level of pricing produced by illicit employment practices, id theft and tax evasion and forgive me for saying this, but I find it damn right immoral to say that we should be forced to encoruage and utilize what is essentially slavery and economic terrorism, for the simple reason that it saves a few dollars.

If costs go up for fear of the process driving away people, well then help us create the process that is least burdensome but still achieves the underlying goal, instead of attacking the underlying goal.

If we are talking about companies being forced to pay back all the money invested in their contracts  then the cost is much more than that.  When companies decide that they don't want to risk losing everything because someone in the company hired someone they shouldn't have, less companies are going to want to do business with the government, meaning less competitive pricing. I don't want to put the government in a position of begging for contractors.
What is the purpose here that would not be served by a verification method to enforce current laws against illegal hiring without placing additional penalties on government contractors?

I don't know, this isn't my bill.

I think it should be required of all employers. We should make it impossible to get a job if you are illegal.

I am putting forward this amendment to change the bill to deal only with new contracts so as to minimize disruption to projects, while I change the penalty period to 2 years to compensate for this change.

The reason I made it removal of the contracts from the original contractors is because I think that there would likely be plenty of other companies who want to take on these jobs who would know not to hire illegal workers.

It depends on how far you want to go. If you establish a grace period and say get compliant by XX/XX/XXXX or loose the contracts, in theory, if you provide the tools and methods for them to get compliant, I don't see why they wouldn't get compliant in that time period, unless the company business model relies on illegal labor to survive. In which case I think such a business should be shutdown for being throughly against the law by design and is likely engaging in other crimes like ID theft and tax evasion to support the criminal labor activities.

Oh yes thats right.

Judging HW's response, I assume, he doesn't accept the Amendment as friendly?

Senators, we are voting on Amendment 20 by Shua to the No Contracts for Illegals Act, please vote aye, nay or abstain.

Nay, but I do like some of the rewording and shall prepose an amendement after this vote to strengthen the language of the current text if this doesn't pass.

Very funny.

The truth of the matter is:  By driving away these immigrants, you can create a very negative impact on the economy... especially by doing so suddenly.

We need to increase our efforts to slow illegal immigration.. but it should be done in a way that doesn't shock the system.  I also believe it is inhumane and un-Atlasian to persecute the immigrants, even if they're illegal.  We shouldn't tell them that their being here is okay and to be rewarded... but we should allow them a chance to earn their citizenship.  But who am I kidding... I'm nothing but another bleeding heart.
