The Daini No. 1 plant is now leaking, 1.7m of rods are exposed, cooling water is declining.

Well, it is not (yet?) another Chernobyl. Not entirely clear yet what's happened, of course, but it looks pretty bad.

I'm eagerly awaiting the left-wing propaganda about the earthquake risk in Central Europe making nuclear energy a ticking time bomb.

It'll just go "safety precautions against earthquakes here are even weaker than in Japan", without going into details about just how bloody unlikely such an earthquake is over here.
Remember "what if the terrorists crashed a passenger jet onto a nuclear power station"? Smiley

^^

Well, the first anti-nuclear energy activists have already started to point out that most earthquakes in Germany do occur in Baden-Württemberg. Tongue

So, Stefan Mappus is going to get screwed in the election in two weeks? We'll see. If so, Fukushima is this election's "October surprise".

Lol, okay. Who was the idiot pointing that out (it's true, of course... but consider the magnitude of our quakes.)

A anti-nuclear energy group called "ausgestrahlt" who's planning a protest against Neckarwestheim today.

For the benefit of our non-German readers... the Neckarwestheim protest has been planned for a long time and is nothing to do with earthquakes.

Basically worse than TMI, but not yet a Chernobyl.

My friend in Tokyo just told me believes one or two of her friends in Sendai have died.

How terrible, my condolences.

Indeed. My sincere condolences.

Godzilla might be preferable.

Hardly.  If that happens it'll be worse than TMI and a lot worse than I thought it would be from the original reports, but it still won't be anywhere near as bad Chernobyl was.

Japan has reported it  to the IAEA as a level 4 incident on the INES scale, which would mean that is slightly less serious than Three Mile Island (which was a level 5 - Chernobyl: level 7).

They don't really know what happened exactly yet - this is as much as they can confirm (and could for most of the day, really).

Does iodine really do anything? I know what it's supposed to do but this seems more like an anti-panic measure than anything.

It does help block radiation in the thyroid.  However, they are now reporting several hundred cases of "sickness" on Fox.
