Angry voters oust Miami-Dade mayor in special vote

MIAMI (Reuters) - Voters in Miami-Dade, one of the most populous U.S. counties, removed Mayor Carlos Alvarez from office in a special vote on Tuesday triggered by popular anger over a hike in property taxes.

Don't know anything about this case....but generally speaking, it's pretty stupid to allow recalls and the like.

Governing shouldn't be about constantly being popular.

I've lost interest in the forum and I've wasted far too much time here.

To those I consider forum friends, it's been nice and I hope to keep contact in some form.

Cheers.

Successful recalls are rare, though. I don't know this guy's numbers, but it typically takes a special kind of unpopular to even be in danger of being recalled.

According to the article, recalling him got 88% of the vote (with 707 of 829 precincts in), so that's either an error or this guy was REALLY unpopular.

With all 829 Precincts reporting, the vote was 88.09% to recall the County Mayor, and in the 46 precincts for District 13 Commissioner, the vote was 87.80% to recall the Mayors sidekick.

Silly me.

I never knew that an election in a single county was a "gubernatorial/statewide election."

Perhaps Lunar can enlighten me.

Is a County Mayor a Governor?

Is the vote in a single county as "statewide election"?

I have noticed a tendency at the Atlas Forum for the usage of terminology far different from the meaning of the words according to Merriam-Webster.

I'm guessing it wasn't so much the tax-raising as it was giving his staff raises and getting an expensive sports car for his official county vehicle (despite already having two county-provided SUVs with drivers!).

Look around the forum; local and legislative election discussions all go on this board. Local governments are all subsidiary to state governments, being creations of state government. This is the best place for them.

Might I suggest the creation of another sub forum under the "Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion" of "Other/Local Elections,"?

Considering how low-traffic the gubernatorial board is, I think renaming it to state and local elections would be better.

True, but when you've got an asshole like Charest in Quebec who is in bed with the mafia and does everything wrong, it's very tempting. Though granted, they elected them in the first place, but oftentimes they did so with not knowledge of what would happen next.

Yeah, I saw that later. I'd love to see what the guy's approval ratings were on the eve of the recall vote. He literally must have been as popular as the plague.

FYI -- I moved this thread here because I liked it and wanted to move it to where people would be most engaged with its material.  I didn't name the boards.

Property taxes weren't the only reason.

Property taxes weren't the only reason.

Not the only reason, but a big reason. The article also cites public employee raises & a plan to use taxpayer funds to build a new baseball stadium.
