I knew this was coming.  When I saw 'would you rather'.. I knew this was coming.  And I still don't know how to answer.

Easily the Opera. Ive only been once years ago but I quite enjoyed it. They were student rate tickets though. I wouldn't spend a lot of money to go to the Met.

Multiple opera productions have looked just like that, opebo.

Oh Really!  Well, I may have to rethink this opera.  I would probably still doze off, but it might be to pleasant dreams.  (every time I have gone to the opera or symphony I have slept rather soundly for whole half-hours at a time).

Treating "opera" like a unified class when it has many different and widely varying genres within it is sort of to me what BRTD must think when he hears "emo" united.  I mean, I'd really, really not want to sit through Dido and Aeneas, or most of Monteverdi's stuff, for example.  I have slightly more tolerance for Baroque opera (though, then, I'd much rather hear concertos or one of Handel's Oratorios), but I have seen two of Handel's operas and heard the soundtracks to more of them.  The conventions are bizarre (walk off stage the second you finish singing your strictly-fitted da-capo aria), the plots tend to be dull...Handel could write fantastic music, though.

Get into Mozart and you're talking more my thing.  I love Mozart's operas.  I've seen three live (you know which three).  Past him and...Romantic stuff can be good.  I like most of Verdi's shows, and Wagner is hit-or-miss depending on how serious the production takes itself.  I love Gilbert & Sullivan, as you know (operetta isn't technically opera).  Puccini...not really a fan, but some of his stuff appeals.

20th century?  Shows like Porgy and Bess or Threepenny Opera are really something, though Porgy and Bess doesn't hold up too well in retrospect.  Leonard Bernstein's Candide is probably my favorite 20th century opera.

Threepenny Opera is not opera, of course.

Dudefest, obviously. I mean, I don't go to festivals and I don't travel except for major acts who're skipping the Rhein-Main area, so it's not a perfect fit, but I do like a show where I can mosh a bit. Try that in the opera. (Hey, might be worth a try, if you're enough people and have been able to bribe security. Grin )

No, it has dialogue, as you know.  But the title makes it impossible to explain that to people.

I'm also a fan of the original English translation and yet all the productions I've found use one of the newfangled "accurate" translations.  Bah.

I couldn't judge that, I've only ever seen German productions obviously.

It's basically the only show of its kind that does get translated that way, and it's specifically because Brecht wanted it to be comprehensible to the working man of whatever nation and not to have a language barrier.  The original English version had Brecht's and Weill's approval and (Weill's wife) Lotte Lenya participated in it on Broadway.  The new translations are more faithful to the German, but a lot less idiomatic.

Is there a bar? Can I bring a date?

Dudefest is about the only thing I can think of that has more homosexual connotations than opera right off the bat, though I honestly have no clue what it is.
